Help! ... does anyone know anything about pond pumps?

My pond pump died last year, it was set up as a waterfall, anyway, I have no idea how to set a new one up so I've bought an Hozelock air pump (320) I supposed you'd just plug it in and away it goes....but no, first I have to fit a plug, which I think I can do, though its been about 25 yrs since I've done so, then there are the non-return valves, the instructions don't say if they have to be above or below the water, I'm not sure what do do.

I think (and I must say that it's only a thought so please don't quote me) pumps have to be 'primed' with water before they're switched on?

By that they need to be under water.

I am not expert and when mine died last year I gave up, ripped it out and filled the hole! lol

i'm no expert on pond pumps, though i have fiddled with a few, and have lots of pumps on my boat which periodically fail. I would think the non-return valve would be for above the water line. Between the pump and the top of the waterfall.

Don't fill it in! Think of the poor froggies!

This is a air pump not a water pond pump, it looks like it pumps air NOT water.

Whatever you do shamrock, do not put it in the water! Zaaap!

Think the non return valve in this case will go at the end of the tube nearest the air stone...

Oh yes, I know the pump doesn't go into the water, but it says to cut the air pipes and insert the non-return valves, but it doesn't say where, should they be above or below the water?

phew! Its just me and cadac that would have electrocuted your fish!

I'd say it goes below the waterline, as that is the point that the air is going to try and return along the tube, so, near to the air stone end rather than the pump end. I suppose its so that water doesn't siphon back up the tube and into the pump.

BUT this is a guess! Maybe don't listen to me i've never come across an pond air-pump!

LOL... yes, I was thinking it was below the the water, then someone on facebook thought above, I'm going to ring the company I bought it from tomorrow and ask for some advice

I looooove ponds and water features . I'm trying the persuade the husband to let me have one in our garden! Just a small one will do me nicely.
