hi i have just taken on another rescue whippet he was kept on an allotment and slept in a wheelie bin  when i got him 4 weeks ago he had hardly any fur and after a few trips to the vet and lots of treatment later he is starting to get his fur back the vet said because he was so run down he had a very bad skin mite and couldnt fight it he is quite a large dog 21 " to the shoulder so should be a good weight but when i got him he was only 8 kilo in weight he now weighs in at 11 and half and i have had him on tripe and biscuit plus various other things but last week or so i notice he seems to be going off his food and leaving more i wonder if he is bored of it lol so am looking for something quite fattening to get the weight on him and so that he dont have to eat loads of it does anyone have any ideas ? thanks

hi

do you leave his food down?

the reason i ask is that if you leave food down for them to have whenever there never hungry

so get picky

my lot food gone 5 seconds of being put down(there pigs )

i also make a pint of gravy (love it)

you could try him with dumplings/pasta/ lamb is /veg is good as well

is coat should come back once he starts putting the weight back on

good :luck: with him

tina

How often do you feed him ?

3 smaller meals a day will help his stomach cope.

A 3KG weight gain in 4 weeks is a huge amount of weight gain for a dog his size. Slow and steady is better.

300- 500g a week weight gain is more than enough for a dog of his size.

He needs to convert the food to muscle and tissue and this can only be done gradually with regular feeding and excersize. Excess food will only turn into fat and cause health issues. You cannot rush this.

It may just be that you are offering him more food than his stomach can cope with and is overfaced by quantity.

I feed Daisy who was very underweight (7kg) due to health issues when she arrived 12 weeks ago the amount specified for her 'proper weight' (about 12kg) +10% divided into 3 meals a day. She puts on about 100g per week.

I would think your rescue should weigh about 16KG -18KG depending on his build when he is at his 'proper' weight. It should take you at least a year to get him there. Do not rush it. My feeling is that he is gaining weight too fast. He is probably leaving his food because his body cannot cope with the amount he is being given.

He is a lucky boy to have a new loving home at last. Good luck with him. :luck:

Good on you for taking him in. My Hector is a rescue too but he had been kept indoors and overfed crap. So he was overweight with big bald patches. I feed both my whippets chicken wings for breakfast, dried food for lunch and something meaty for tea. I say something meaty but they both love sardines and mackerel. Hector is so much fitter now and his coat is much better. Bald patches have almost gone. I think it is the omega 3 fatty acids in the fish that has done the trick. ;)

Very Well done for taking on this poor little mite!

Be great to see some pics of his progress!

Have you tried just feeding the tripe, or lamb or Beef on its own, miss out the mixer and give biscuits at another time of day in form of bonios or the like?

How is his mouth looking? teeth and gum problems could put him off eating

:luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

Well done for helping this poor lad. Have you considered giving him some goat's milk to supplement his diet?

thanks for all the advice he is on 3 small meals a day as u can see by the amount he put on in 4 weeks how underfed he had been he seems to have settled down to 2 small meals now and the odd treat skin is healing real well and he is learning to play with the other whippets its great to see i dont think he has ever plaayed ball or been able to just chill out in front of the fire as he seems to always be worried he gonna be yelled at makes me so mad to think how he was treated i have never understood why anyone would treat any animal like that once again thanks and happy xmas from smokey thats his name lol and all the rest of the gang when i get chance i will put a pic on i should have taken some when i first got him for you to see the diff but ah well

If i want to put weight on dog I feed them chicken necks; my dogs will eat as many as I give them. I imagine chicken wings would be as good and it is also good to clean their teeth.

we had a problem with Phoebe she was very thin and alot of hair loss ( we have Lurchers) she was pushed out of a moving car on the yorkshire moors that all we know about her she is VERY highly strung. She has got better over the years (3) and we have fed her Lamb for the wait and paster cos she loves it but Pilchards they a magic for coats and bones joints all ours have them with tinned tomartos.

during racing season Phoebe still loses alot of wait and hair it can be hard to keep the wait on but as I have said she is very highlt strung and if you have been to a show when she is racing she is mentle for the lure and all she thinks about to a point when the racing is over we have to show her that the lure has gone :clown:

so we feed cooked minced lamb and jucies,paster/tinned tomartos and pilchareds and tinned tomartos. (tinned toms are good for cramping as well when racing.)

hope this helps we have 4 lurchers now very addictive (w00t)

Aww he's gorgious! Maybe his feeding problems will improve as he settles in more? I know what a worry it is though Dotty is a poor 'doer' she only eats what she thinks she needs she's not skinny skinny but not as big as she should be but then she is always on the go everything is done at two speeds flat out and stop we've now got her on CSJ it used to be James Wellbeloved but a lot of people rate CSJ and I have to say its been good for Duke and his dodgy guts. Dotty will eat it but she has taken some time to get used to it. Good luck with your lovely little man I'm sure you'll find something that suits him. cheers sue :)

thanks he is coming on well now nearly all his bald patches have gone and as long as he keeps eating and gaining weight i will be happy he is quite a big whippet in height so looks a lot skinnier hopefully when the weather gets better and i can get him out more he will get some muscle on him too

I was recommended to give a skinny Whippet a good old fashioned fry up to get weight on - bacon and sausages!! (w00t)

Add horlicks to their food ..... Its sweet and tempts them to eat but is also full of lots of vits, mins and trace elements ....... It'll help put weight on too :luck:

My two go mad for baked sweet potatoes

Oh bless him, he's gorgeous. Thank goodness he's safe and in a loving home now

Eve's advice about slow and steady weight gain is spot on, if he's been starved his stomach will have shrunk and he won't be able to cope with large amounts so you need to build him up gradually with small frequent meals. I'd be cautious about using any foods that are high in fat, although they are good for keeping weight on a healthy dog your boy will not have been used to this sort of diet and could end up with an upset stomach that will undo all the gains he's made so far so I'd keep things fairly bland for now.

Personally I'd stick to a good quality dried food 3 times a day with small amounts of things like sardines, pilchards, chicken and white fish added to make it interesting (oily fish will definitely help his coat!). Or as others have suggested give him one meal of raw chicken wings or necks, then dried food for the other meals. Green tripe might also be worth a try if he's really picky with his food, all dogs seem to love it!

Loads of luck with him, I hope we'll see some more pictures soon :luck:
