I just got Lily a lovely little coat through Freecycle, but it was a waxed coat and has been washed several times so is no longer waterproof. Can anyone tell me how to re-wax it? What sort of wax do i need? I won't need much as she is a little girl with a little coat!!! :- "

Thanks for any help.

Years ago you used to be able to buy a spray to water proof horses new zealand rugs. Try your local saddlery they may have something that will do the job. Or dp you have a old type cobblers shop bear you they may have something for re waxing wax jackets

Or a walking shop, you can get reproofing spray although it might be as expensive as a new coat would have been (w00t) they don't know what to charge at those places

I use techwash to reproof Andys Berghaus coat but only because the coat was expensive

If you go on the Nikwax site you can enter a competition to win a small bottle of techwash(sometimes other things) you just answer the questions: which the answers are in the text and they send you one

You can buy these in Millets too

the pre wash to put into the washing..that reproofs them and also a spray to water proof them again.

If it is like the material Barbour coats are made from you can buy it in a tin at outdoor stores. You heat it up, rub it in, then dry it with a hairdryer..... messy but worth it

I got this at a local gun and tackle shop and it worked a treat and the tin lasted ages too

Thanks - I'll look in the yellow pages for an outdoor store - no idea if we have any, but as I live in the country in kent, there must be one somewhere!! I'll give it a try, and also the stuff suggestd by Lesley -maybe the freebie will be enough to do one little coat!!

Thanks for the help guys

When I can, I'll get a photo of lily in her coat and post it. She has put on so much weight since we got her almost a year ago (whippet rescue said she was as near to death as any dog they had ever rescued) and is such a character, in spite of being deaf and almost blind!

Getting Willow 3 months ago has brought out all her maternal instincts and they cuddle up together all the time, and she washes his ears (and willy!!!) and looks after him. He is also about 14 (like Lily) and totally blind and almost deaf!!! A great pair. he is also slowly putting on weight, but is a very fussy eater.
