I am starting to search for a whippet puppy and am looking for some advice on where to look.

I am looking for a whippet bitch puppy with show potential. I would ideally like to find a breeder that is not too far away from me (Newcastle upon Tyne) purely so that I will be able to keep contact and see them around at shows. Someone that could act as a mentor for me starting to show would be great!

So, how can I find a good breeder? Where is the best place to look for a puppy? Any other advice?

Thanks in advance

hi and welcome to k9

im sure some of the show people would be able to point you in the right direction , but also try the midland whippet club and the norrthern whippet club they should be able to advise on where to look :)

As already mention contact the Whippet Club who should be able to help you :D Don't be afraid to ask alot of questions to the breeder and it should be same for the breeder :D

Good luck in your search :luck:

Whippet club secretaries are usually a good place to start your search. It means picking up the phone.

Here's a link to various regional whippet clubs (see breed clubs on the link). Pick the club nearest to you and give the secretary a call.

Good luck.

There is a champ show this weekend - Driffield - (sorry, can't remember where it is exactly - try googling Driffield Championship Dog Show) where you will see lots of breeders from the North as well as the usual suspects from the South. Catalogues are pricey - usually about £5 but they will names and addresses. Look at the classes to see what type of whippet appeals to you most, then introduce yourself to the exhibitor - you will see from the catalogue if they are also the breeder. Everyone likes to be complimented on their dog so I am sure they will be happy to talk to you. If you can't manage Saturday, sec.of the North Eastern Whippet Soc (NEWS) is Paul Glaholm - tel 0191 4131259 and their ch show os Nov 8 at Sherburn Sports Centre.

As has been said previously, contact the breed club secretary's who should be able to tell you of reputable breeders with litters planned.

Be prepared to wait and travel for the right puppy. Breeders will have litters planned a long time in advance and therefore may already have people waiting for a puppy.

Ask lots and lots of questions and expect to be asked them in return, to see if a breeder is right for you and vice versa.

See if you can get along to NEWS Champ show in November to get an idea of the whippet you like and then perhaps start from there.

Most breeders are there at the end of a phone or email to answer any questions and provide support at any time, and love to see their babies, receive updates etc, I know it is the thing I love most about having a litter - seeing them turn into wonderful family members.

So hopefully you will find a great mentor. Most of us travel the length and breadth of the country travelling to shows, so keeping in touch would certainly not be a problem in most cases!

Best of luck!

Thanks so much for the help.

Unfortunately I can't get the time off work to go to Driffield, it was a choice between Driffield and Darlington this year. I went to Darlington but only stayed a couple of hours because I had an awful chest infection. Typical!

I will be at the NEWS champ show in November cooing over all the dogs and wishing I had one no doubt!

I will contact the whippet club, thank you very much for all the help.
