Help With Puppy Crate Training

weve just got a new puppy[ sprocker], i just want to know more about crate training, we bought one and she goes in it brilliantly its her safe place, but dont know how often or for how long we should have her in there, at the moment were struggling with house training we take her out for walks, not too far shes only 13 weeks, and stand in the garden for what seems like ages in the rain, then she walks in and goes in the house.

Put the pup outside after every meal and every time it wakes up. Do you have a garden or do you have to walk the pup? Let the pup sniff about and perform quietly in its own time, when you see it performing reward it vocally with the same cheery word........keep this up and soon the dog will start to toilet on command when you use this word. Keep it in the crate when you do not have the time to constantly watch it, when you are free - take it outside straightaway before playing or feeding etc.. Persevere - it should all fall into place when he is in a routine and old enough to have good control over his functions. Having trained dogs with and without crates, my experience is that every pup should have one! :thumbsup:

does she ever toilet in the garden?

dogs return to where they can smell that they've been before, so if she hasn't toileted outside, mop up an accident with kitchen towel and deposit it where you want her to go

cleaning up after a dog to human standards isn't enough. A dog can still smell it. You'll need to use biological soap or steam cleaning to remove all traces

Every 20 mins - half an hour take her outside, a pup has not full bladder control for a good while yet ? the crate should only ever have a positive association and her safe place where she can go and not be bothered, leave the door open and she will happily go in of her own accord, feed her in there too if she starts to not want to go in, its all about positive reinforcement. Pups sleep for hours so as soon as she wakes take her outside, watch her and as soon as she pee's go nuts with praise and treat her so she knows peeing = good stuff .
