Hi,

This is my first post here so I shall try not to ramble on to much :) & hello to all

I have 2 white GSD's (both bitches & spayed) one at 18months & the other 14months, we got the elder from a rescue centre at around 5months & the younger from a very reputable breeder as a friend for the older (stay with me here please! :b )

When they were both young & able to go out & be socialized they were & also attended puppy classes (which they always behaved in!) & recently they were sent to a four week training school (Royvon) costing me nearly £2000.

After you have trawled through the above here's the problem, they are fantastic & very loving dogs great with all people & all children but they have issues with other dogs mainly small dogs I.e. Jack Russels, Bull Terriers etc etc the only dogs they are great with are other GSD's & Bull Mastiffs (there is a breeder near me & lots of them homed around the area) - they have never attacked any dogs but will charge growling very aggressively & as you can imagine this looks as bad as it sounds - about 98% of the time they choose not to listen to me when they run at a dog but will do everything asked the rest of the time (all the standards, tricks etc etc) I have now been trying & trying for, well about a year & a half with the rescued bitch & I just do not know what to do - I feel at the moment that my option is to let one of them go (the less responsive to me being the younger one that I bought from the breeder) and concentrate on one :'(

Please do not judge me after reading the above as a bad owner I really have tried many avenues to no avail & really am seeking help & advice.

Many Thanks

Owen

hi owen, ive not had much experience with g.s.d.s but i have had dobermanns for some years, which are also a quite intelligent breed who if not taught from puppyhood can be a bit dominant.what training did your dogs do at royvons?did you have these problems before or after they went there for training?how dominant are you with the dogs at home?in other words who is the boss?who is the more dominant of the two dogs and why do you think so?you say youve been trying for about a year and a half with the rescue bitch, but i notice you only got her at 5 months and shes only 18 months old now?what exactly have you been trying with her?sorry for all the questions but before i can give any advice i need to know more :)

Ive had a few GSD over the yrs. Never had a problem with them going for other dogs though. I would keep them both on a lead and only let them off if no other dogs are around.

If you take only 1 of them out does this still happen ?,,There is a good GSD site on k9,,Just click the link,,there is one or two on k9 who own, breed GSD, so in time one of them might find your post :)

PS,,,They are cracking dogs though,,and I will get another in a few years :D :D

Hiya, just a suggestion for you ... maybe you could look for a greyhound forum, particularly one which deals with rehoming etc. These people will have experience of retraining dogs with high prey drive (which is what this problem sounds like), and may be able to give you some specific advice. Hope you get your problem sorted - sounds like you've put your all into these dogs! :))
