Count me in Patsy - it is such a shame that you couldn't persuade Phil to carry on judging though but I hope that we will occasionally still see him at the ringside.

:( I am sorry that I have only just caught up with this post, very sad news to hear that someone of Phils experience, contribution and years in the breed has decided to retire entirely.

Please keep us posted on contributions, a lovely idea and we would like to participate too.

And please lets not have any further news of this kind for the forseeable future, we cannot afford to loose anymore of the experienced people, their knowledge is invaluable to the breed.

count me in too  i brought my charile off phil nearly 3 years ago, he made me feel so welcome and was so nice and very helpful, i too have his book which i have read and re-read.

i wish him all the best

It's hard to believe that Phil will actually "retire" from whippets.

As an obsessive pedigree-head, reading his book showed just what a genius he has been with his bloodlines.

I am sure that the whippet world, myself included, can collect enough to get him something really deserved.

The only problem is that sending money to UK from here is not easy.  It costs over $20 to get a bank cheque.  Unless money could be paid by PayPal, or we could as a club here collect the donations and send them as a whole with the list of people who contributed.
This is why I suggested asking Nigel to set up something along the lines of a special paypal donate button Lida. I personally don't see any need for my name to be added. I be quite happy in knowing that I was just acknowledged as "whippet lovers from all over the world"

:)

I've been sending money to the UK for 30 years & I just send the cash, wrapped in tin foil so the post office machines can't see the metal stripe in the note, inside a letter in an ordinary envelople. The secret is not to draw attention to it. I've done the same to America & France & never had anything go astray. However, a Paypal set up would be much better if it could be arranged.

I have pm'd Nigel to ask about setting up a Paypal fund. This is the reply I received (I hope I am not breaking any rules by posting a pm)

I have no objection to a fund being set up & if required that to be advertised through K9. However, unfortunately we are unable to manage the fund because all 'income' whether through donations or advertising on K9 has to be accounted for to our tax authorities & tax paid accordingly. So there is no way for us to accept donations without a part being taken for tax.

From this point on I would like to split the topic, so we can explore our options.

Just to echo what everyone else has said, that it is a shame - my first whippet was sired by Fergal, Hillsdown and Silkstone were the first names I discovered in the whippet world

We remember the days of the long hair bell bottom trousers and we called him Pip.

I've heard plenty of stories from some of my more 'established' whippet friends, so I agree, photos are definately needed - just an idea, a 'this is your life with whippets' type of photo album makes a brilliant present and gives plenty of opportunity for all his old buddies to contribute something personal :- "

UKUSA...who are you? Think I know but always good to know who you are talking to. PM me if you are very shy & want to keep your ID a secret :b
Cathie

ooo, I was trying to work it out too!

Patsy and I are knocked out by the response to our idea and we are very gratefull that the Whippet World has responded the way it has .We thank everyone for their suggestions however knowing Phill as we do the gift that we have chosen for him will hit the spot for him. Phil has lots and lots of photos of now and then, so as nice a suggestion as an album is Phill does have a lot of that kind of stuff. Phill is quite a private man so we think that a party would not really be his thing but a pint in the bar afterwards is.

but how many pints Nicky , Thats the question

It is a sad short story for the world of the whippet. :(

His book is very interesting - I sometimes him to book to future owners to know this race as well as that of the Patsy Gilmour.

The founder of my breeding is a girl of Hillsdown Houdini (CH. Phinjani Pinball Wizard and Hilldown Blaque Rose) - The brother of Sorcerer.
