I'm just about to book our summer holiday and we fancy going to Scotland again this year. :) We have visited most areas including the Western Isles (we loved it and would go again if it wasn't so far :( ) and so this year we are considering either somewhere around the Kintyre penisular or the far North East. So just wondered if anyone else has been to those parts of Scotland and what did they think of it? We do some walking (though not huge distances) but also like visiting castles and other monuments and of course, the whippets love sandy beaches! :D

Hi Gillian.

You probably know my ideas already....but how about Northumberland? It's not Scotland but it's very close :p

I haven't been but it's on our shortlist for our September holiday. Plenty of beaches and castles to choose from. Bamburgh & Lindisfarne Castles spring to mind almost immediately.

Janis??? :- "

Still...I expect you'd like some more ideas.

Hi Nicola

Northumberland is high on the list of alternatives, not least for the fact that maybe we could arrange to meet Oscar, Kobi and Archie somewhere  - not forgetting Janis of course :- " !!! But we have been before a couple of times and we like to try different places so it's Scotland at the moment.

Well if you do decide to come that close Gillian....please call and see us...

We are not that far from the A68. :)

My hubby goes up to Scotland on business quite a lot, I shall ask him which areas he recomends. ;)

Opps...I didn't realise you'd been to Northumberland. I've never visited NNE Scotland nor the Kintyre Peninsular, so will be interested to see any responses too.

I've been a peninsular farther up on the west coast, the Ardnamurchan Peninsular. It's a tortuous drive though (we did it without the dogs) but well worth it. It's also a quick hop over to Mull, if you fancy a day trip.

I know :- " .....I'm not really answering your initial question.........just waffling really. I love Scotland as you know....... :teehee:

We've been to Ardnamuchan too - we went right out to the lighthouse at the end, I think it's the most westerly point on the British mainland isn't it? Felt very remote. We love Scotland too.

I shall read the suggestions with interest, as we are also planning on taking the dogs up to Scotland later in the year.

We were thinking of the North east too, but not narrowed it down any further than that yet!

We are going to the Ardnamurchan peninusla for our holiday this year too - although not right out on the westerly point, nearer Mingarry, can't wait! I am so looking forward to seeing the wildlife, we have been promised seals and otters, dolphins and whales, and possibly pinemartens!

We used to spend a lot of time as children up in Sutherland, as my father spent had relations in Strathy and Melvich, near Thurso - and we have lovely memories of those holidays, especially ponytrekking in the hills. Might be a bit bleak for some though. :- "

Ha....I`m a Newcastle Girl and Northumberland is unbeatable, almost !! Try Bamburgh !! It`s lovely there with a lovely quiet beach for miles. The dogs will adore it , really !!!....Beautiful Castle for you too and at Walkworth nearby.

I love Oban in Scotland or anywhere there, it is so lovely ! I think it has a pebble shore though. Kintyre is good for beaches especially Bellochuntuy and Machrihanish. I haven`t been for years but it used to be nice, it may have changed though.

Wherever you go, I hope you have a great time with the dogs.

Well, we've decided to stick with the west coast, but think we'll spend a week in Kintyre and a week on Arran. We'll leave the NE for another year! :) Now I just need to browse the internet for some nice dog friendly properties. Thanks for the tips on nice beaches, Flowerpot.

I would like to visit Northumberland again, so perhaps next year. It's years since we had a holiday there. We went to this brilliant B&B in Rothbury and I know it was a long time ago because it was pre-whippets so it must have been before 1994. How time flies. (w00t)

oh - i am too late!!

i live in the very North of Scotland - Caithness, and could have sent you lots of pictures and info on how great it is up here :))

we spent Christmas day on a deserted beach with our two whippies and it was so mild i had to take my hat and scarf off!

just shout if you ever want any info x
