Well firstly hey everyone this will be my first post and I hope im not breaking any forum etiquette.

Yep I’m afraid I’m asking the age old question about dogs being left home alone……

Basically I will shortly be in a position to purchase or re home a dog but like so many others work full time. Now in my opinion I could still keep a dog happy and healthy (mentally and physically) but I know so many others would disagree.

So my question really is have people had much experience? and which breeds if any would you recommend?

I suppose a I should expand a little further about the situation and environment, the dog will be living in a split level flat with 24hour access to a secure but limited (enough room to relieve itself and get some fresh air but no tear around) roof terrace. I am able to dedicate around 90mins a day during the week to exercise. The plan would be to go for a morning jog (or walk if it’s more breed appropriate) before work it would then be left till lunch time. Some days I will be able to pop home other I won't. In the evening the dog will be taken for its proper off lead romp for around an hour. When we are not at generally weekend our lives are very dog friendly and the dog would have our company for most of the day and plenty of long walks and days out. I would be keen to get involved with either agility or search and rescue but this is not really important. Of course any dog would attend training and socialization classes.

My plan would be to get 2 dogs so it would not strictly speaking be alone and probably not a puppy.

Breed wise I have a soft spot for mastiff but realistically not the space.

What do people think?

do you mean 24hr access to the roof terrace, as in he can go for a pee while you are out? Can't see a real problem with that, as long as you leave him dead tired when you go out, and its not every single day. People do need to work, its just down to the individual dog how well it responds to having no company, but then if you got two, that could work, if they already knew each other. How secure is the terrace? I wouldn't dare leave mine with access to outside cos he is a real escape artist..

Mastiff in a small space, oo er? I love them too, such calm things, i used to walk one, she was called ten-stone-lucy, she was incredible, if you took her to the pub, she would act all embarassed about her bulk, and try and hide under the table or in a corner. I live in a tiny space (boat) with my dog, but he does fold up small. I wouldn't be happy leaving him all day, in that small a space, but a flat should be ok, as long as you don't get a crazy bouncy breed. Mastiffs aren't bouncy ;) ! Cannot imagine one jogging tho, or particularly long walks, especially in the hot summer (haha!)

Do try and get an adult or rescue dog, puppies need a lot of time to train them, and need to be let out to pee much more regularly than an older dog. And there are thousands of older ones in rescue waiting for homes. Some rescue centres can be a bit sniffy about giving dogs to people that work, but do not let that put you off, keep trying till you find one, good luck!

That tigery one is gorgeous, good call barretbabies! Greyhounds love to lie around all day...

Handsome pair aren't they , would be lovely to see them homed together :luck:

Greyhound!

A couple of 30 minutes walk a day, a soft bed and some food and they're happy.

Good shout! :)

Thanks for the input, you all seem to have pretty much the same opinion as me. Just wanted to see what others thought. Hope thoose two find a great home but they arn't for us.

Oh and don't worry we arn't going to try and squeeze a mastiff in just meant thats the breed type i liked  .
