I too defintely want to come along next year - promised myself I would this year but never quite got round to it!

Some of the meets are going to be quite a trek for me too - but as you say Dessie after dragging them to shows its only fair they have fun days out doing what they do best :D

I'd have to agree with Dessie on this .......Jacob finds lure coursing much easier than racing (by easier I mean there's less strain on him and his body, so he recovers much quicker).....plus he thinks it's much more fun than running in a straight line

Hope you can make it Joe, Newbury would probably be your nearest and that is a nice venue. It really is a good day out and we all get on so well, although it is a competition there is no real competitiveness because whether the dogs run 'well' or not it is just for them to enjoy and they don't know any different if they have won or not!!! In fact, the 'naughty' ones can be quite funny so you can have a good laugh as well

It was at Makeny when Shirley Rawlings Show Champion dog broke his hock badly, that put me right off :( .

My gang get plenty of free gallops when chasing crows on Nottingham racecourse , and at the moment they have found a new quarry to chase ,, LIBBEE , She loves it and runs all the others ragged , even Fleur , . Libbee might only be 7 months but they have one hell of a job trying to catch her , even when they all come from differnt sides she just side steps them and is away again , Great to watch . /

Are there any lure coursing meets that go on for the whole weekend? I would really love to come over to one but it would make more economic sense to spend a weekend rather than a Saturday or Sunday afternoon?

I'll have to see if any are on the same weekend as some of the major champ shows, I want to go just to see lure coursing done properly!! If it turned out that any of my dogs could compete then I probably would go over just for a meeting.

Regards,

Janet

No. Meetings are always held on a Sunday and it is an all day job because the hounds run one way in the morning and then the course is reversed in the afternoon. There are a lot of hound taking part, maximum 90, but generally 50/60 depending where the meeting is. It takes the committee most of the Saturday to prepare the course, so help is always gratefully received if you want to make a weekend of it!!

Interesting. In the US and Canada lure courses are always two events at the one location. One on the Saturday and one on the Sunday. Different course layouts and distances each day.

There are a few triple events over long weekends which are a 200 yd four program straight race one day, an oval the next and a lure course the third. Usually in that order but not always. Apart from individual event winners there is usually an award for the highest scoring dog over three days. Takes a fit strong dog to win it not to mention versatile. I don't know of any dog that has placed first in all three events.
