Trying to track down the original image on my clock, I came across this site which has lots of hound images in fine art through the ages, mainly greyhounds but the odd whippety type does creep into some

See if you can spot the earliest representation of a brindle?

I find it fascinating looking at hounds in art, there are many more whippet-like and size hounds around than is documented. I've been looking through my book of Attic vases, there are lots representations of very whippety hounds, with some very typical poses; there is the odd large greyhound and you can definitely tell the difference.

I once read that the first record of brindle colouration in a greyhound was in the 18th Century (the author's theory was that the colour came in from crosses from bull breeds) and certainly you don't find many representations of stripey hounds in art. The earliest one I've found is this Paul de Vos painting from around 1700 (the version on the web gallery is very small and hard to see).
