Thanks Gypsysmum. I do understand what you are saying but it did work really successfully with the puppy (a sheltie) we had when the children were small (some years ago!). I do remember though that we didn't teach him to pooh in his 'patch' until he was a year old, when we moved house and I didn't want pooh on the lawn with young children. He did pick it up quite quickly and seemed unscathed by the experience. I need to give this some consideration though. We have now gone back a step with rewards and now follow Evie around so that we can treat immediately, to make sure that we have really got on top of house training.

Shelties are one of the easiest breeds to train in most things and they tend to house train themselves, being in general a very clean breed, as soon as they can they go outside. So I wouldn't necessarily expect most breeds to be as easy as they are.

You may well be right BakerJohn, he was very bright and quick to learn. He also seemed to really want to please and had such a lovely temperament. Our current pup, a Cockapoo, does also seem pretty bright and I have taught her several 'tricks/behaviours' so far, so am hoping that she will soon pick up what we are asking of her. She is much more 'bouncy' than our sheltie was (as far as I remember) so perhaps I just need to be bit more patient.
