I am trying to find a companion for my saluki greyhound lurcher. I was hoping to get a whippet which would be a perfect size, but have in fact found a georgeous 11 week old puppy that is being sold due to the owners illness. The puppy has a whippet mother and a saluki greyhound father and is around 10 inches to the shoulder now, has anyone any advice on how big he may grow as my own dog is 30 inches to the shoulder and I really don't have room for another large dog!

How Big Will A Whippet X Saluki Greyhound Puppy Grow To?

Is it posible for you to find out how tall the Saluki father of the pup is as this might help ?
Perhaps the seller has contact details for the breeder or could ask for you.
If the pup is 10" at 11 weeks, it sounds small.
Your present dog tall for a Saluki (must be the greyhound mix) . I think the breed average for a Saluki dog is about 25" - 28" bitches being a bit smaller. I would doubt that the pup will grow as large as your present dog.
You could post on the lurcher or other breeds section of k9 as someone there might have a better idea.
Esty on k9 has just adopted a saluki x whippet called Emmy. Absolutely stunning and not too big judging from the photos.

Thanks for that, I don't think the seller has the details of how tall the Salukix greyhound father is, it was hard enough to get him to work out the size of the puppy!

As Eve mentioned, I've recently adopted a whippet x saluki, though we think the saluki may be about 1/8 as she has virtually no 'feathering' on her tail/ ears. As she was a stray there could also be something else in the mix but she looks like a big whippet with distinctive saluki colouring. She's about 20 inches to the shoulder, about an inch and half smaller than my large male pure bred whippets - she's three so fully grown. However she is quite long in her body and takes the same size coats as the boys (23"). Obviously a male dog will grow bigger and you have to factor in the greyhound bit - depends how much greyhound the dad has.
I will say she is a sociable girl with an excellent temperament around children and all dogs we have met. She doesn't run off too far ( about 75 yards) BUT she will come back in her own time as opposed to when I call her....however she's only known her new name for 4 weeks so this could be something to do with it! When she goes off I have to send my whippet Roscoe to bring her back! I remember reading somewhere that salukis are quite thick (well, they need a lot of repetition to learn something) but the whippet side should offer some brain :teehee:

we have fosterd a lot of saluke and saluke crosses and there not thick far from it there very very cleaver but allso stuborn. most of the ones here ahve learnt to open doors boxs fridges cupboards themselves. all my door handles used to be on upside down and child catches of fridegs and cupboards. They have allso been very sweet natured once they get to know you but can be reserved with strangers. they are very stuborn and know there own mined though but you have the greyhound and whippet mixs in there aswell so its personality can be any or or a mixs of all 3. I have a whippet grey cross here and shes 23" at the shoulder
I agree, Wendy. Emmy won't be long learning to open the dog food cupboard, I can tell. It wouldn't occur to our whippets but Dash worked it out within minutes of seeing me open it the first time! She also wasn't house trained when we got her but learned very quickly that 'go toilet' meant pee and get a treat reward. She was totally house trained in a week and can easily last the night without needing to be let out (she just peed on the landing and in the bedroom on her first night, didn't even ask to go out.)She was quite distant with us for a couple of days after we got her but now is a cuddle monster and as I said, very sociable with other dogs. She is even fantastic with the cat, either totally ignores him or gives him a little lick and goes on her way.
i think judgeing by the mother and father, you can expect anything from 26 to 28 inchs to the shoulder.
