Hi I've recently got a new Lurcher pup, she's 1/4 deer hound, 3/4 greyhound, ive had many a Lurcher but this new pup is growing at some rate.

She's 15 inches to the withers and 11 weeks old,, just wondering if anyone could give any advice on how big she will grow. sorry bout having no pics, i will see if i can get some posted soon,

cheers Jake

deerhound x greyhound (w00t) gonna be pretty big girl i think :- "

Yeah, i hope she is :) however and i could be wrong, but she seems to be getting pretty big for the cross, i will see if i can get a pic or few.

Sounds lovely, look forward to pictures.

As with all pups (especiallly those) of the leggy variety best to take care now to get the best out of them as they mature, but I'm sure you will

How tall was the sire/dam do you know? Thats usually a decent benchmark...though with variations

From a previous post a while ago, I remember you have other lurchers...and a terrier? How are they taking to the new arrival?

arr they're fine, the terrier rules the house and at first she was a little territorial but now she plays with her just like the rest of the clan. I'm finding it hard it limit her exercise, i know that it can be bad for big dogs to have to much exercise but she loves running and playing with the other dogs.

Aye they need to play, and let off steam  Pleased your others are all getting on fine :)

Sorry forgot to add - do you know the size or the mum and/or dad of your pup?

Dam was a small greyhound, the sire, who was half deer, half greyhound was apparently very big, sorry i carn't give any measurements, what worries me is that my mum used to own irish wolfhounds and she said shes never seen a puppie grow at the pace this one since she used to have her wolfhounds. How big are deer hounds at 11-12 weeks old?

Jake

Hi, think we should start a sweepstake on this one shakey

Sorry, I've never kept a record of measurements (think it might be more of a man thing  see if we can chase Doxhope up on this one, believe he kept records of height and weight of his dogs), from what I can remember its rapid in the early months, only thing I could do is take photos of photos (scanner playing up) for you. However my guess is she'll end up about 28" to the shoulder tops, as that rapid growth thing is highly deceptive. Perception of 'big' depends on what your used to looking at, would'nt panic :)) Depends what you want from her?

Hi Shakey,

I have records of every litter of deerhounds, first crossers and lurchers going back to the 70`s, SOMEWHERE :b Ive been searching today, and again tomorrow, if I find them I will post them. Off the top of my head lurcher and first cross pups at 12 week would be around 12 inches, a lot of times it worked out an inch for every week, but at around sixteen weeks anything that was going to be taller increased, a first cross bitch that sticks in my mind at 18 weeks was 21 inches, she turned out 27 inches when fully grown, not large for a first cross deerhound x greyhound, but large for one of ours. I havent bred any three quarter breds myself, so havent any records on these. Deerhound, well, phenomenal growth rates, but at 12 weeks 15 inches wouldnt be too big for that breed, but these dogs do tend to grow one way at a time, they will fly up, stop, fill out a bit, stop, and go up again. At 12 weeks it would be impossible to say how big it will end up, but it will be tall. Another thing with these three quarter breds, is that certain recessive traits that were locked away in the F1 matings, can resurface in the next generation, Im not saying height is a recessive trait in these two breeds, but Im just showing that throw backs to certain traits can re-surface, so with these dogs there is more variation in every department, colour for example, first crossers can only be either brindle or black, three quarter breds can be any colour, size too can be effected, Ive seen three quarter breds 30 inches at the shoulder, and at the other extreme, 25 inches. At a guess I would say your dog will level out between 28 and 30 inches, and by that time you are going to love it to bits, "warts and all"

Hi again Shakey, just re-read your post, see its a bitch, if bappit is starting a sweep stake, put me down for 28 inches fully grown. Bitches tend to grow quicker than their lazy male counterparts, they also rarely have the scope of a male, rarely as big

If she is less I show my bum in Fenwicks window in Newcastle :sweating: if she is 28 I win  if she is taller all bets void  How big do you, or anyone else on K9 say she`s going to be?????

Where exactly in Newcastle IS Fenwicks????? Just in case ??????????

Fenwick's is on Northumberland street, in the town centre, hehe.

thanks alot for the information, thats a great help. I suppose i dosn't really matter how big she grows i was looking for a big lurcher, my other two are Whippet cross collie and greyhound whippet so both are small. It's my mum who persuaded me to get a big dog, she misses her Wolfhounds. Supose she will really only really be used for Rabbiting.

I will obviously keep you posted on her progress, see who wins that stake, lol.

I will see if i can get some pics on aswell.

Thanks again Doxhope and Bappit, Jake

Hi shakey,

yes your right, size means nothing(from that statement you will deduct that I am male) :D :D dogs from this type of breeding have so many other things to offer, you wanted a bigger dog, and your going to get what you wanted. She wont be too big for rabbits, I have pure bred deerhounds that take these quite easily. So you have best of both world to suit you and your mam

Was only joking about the Fenwicks window thing peony, with me being the shy and retiring type 8)

Bloody typical!!!!!!!!! Men eh???????? I was gonna show you my puppies as well lol ;)

Stop trying to wriggle out of this AGAIN!!! Doxhope, there is obviously a burning desire about Fenwicks :b

Good 'un peony, puppies eh? Come on then whats you guess? Go on!

Have to keep us up to speed now shakey  ...have realised photos I'm about to attach are a bit mince as they are photos of photos...and besides that 1st one is of my son at 11 years old (also Jake) with deerhound bitch pup...but given who's to know what size my son was at 11 not the best indication of size
