I thought it would be interesting to see how people started.

We always had rescue dogs before whippets. One year my sister decided she wanted a dog for security, so we went to Last Chance rescue centre to see what they had. When we got there we both fell in love with the most beautiful lurcher pup and my sister took her home. It was then that i decided that i would like one and when i saw lurcher pups for homing in the same rescue centre I drove down immediately and adopted this lovely little brindle and white Lurcher (which turned out to be more staffie than lurcher

) Joey. I'd heard that lurchers raced and thought that sounded like fun so went on the internet and found Sussex Longdogs. We semi trained Joey with him chasing my son on his bike towing a furry toy. At about 10 months we took him to Sussex Longdogs and was told we had to trial him, which we did and lucky enough he chased. So at 12 months old we stuck him in the racing for "under 21 inch" lurchers. Bless him, we didn't know what a "non ped" was, and wasn't told what they were, poor Joey didn't stand a chance and basically gave up chasing everytime because the lure had gone and was out of sight. So we packed up racing.

A couple of years later, my interest built again and i got onto the old K9 Community and found out about Harvel and Maidstone pedigree whippet racing clubs. Myself and Sandra didn't really fancy a whippet but I persuaded her to go and have a look. We turned up and nobody welcomed us and we felt a bit unwanted, but i decided to bite the bullet and ask what was happening etc. I spoke to Lesley Meaker and she introduced me to Toddy and he was brilliant, he spoke to me for about half an hour and told us all about racing etc. I was hooked I then asked if he knew of any pups being available. Just then Daphne kitchen walked by and said the only one she knows of was in Cornwall. That was it, I spoke to Christine Harry and she said there was one left (Marley). We drove all the way to Cornwall on that Thursday and got a fantastic welcome from Christine and Tony. We saw the pups and that was that Marley was ours.

Marley was the perfect whippet for us in every way, after the failure we had with Joey and racing. Ok he's never won an open or champs but he has has done everything right, even when we mucked up or did things wrong. We were lucky to be able to go to EAWRC where the Browns made us feel welcome and helped us develop Marley. This encouraged us to keep racing, and after a year decide to get another dog, Bentley.

I've gone on too long now the reason i've done this is that we need to encourage more people in the sport, we could easily have walked away from racing after our first experience, it was only luck and determination that got us where we are now, just about to start our 4th year racing.

Nice write up Dave, should of come up north when ya started more friendly lol.don't know if i should talk about this but here goes.

mine was more of, i had to have a life change, following the wolves for 20 years in the late 80s and 90s wasn't good, always in trouble, the away fans didn't like me.

so in 2000 i got me first whippet a show breed, didn't get into that so in 2004 went to crufts and there i meet mr and mrs rixon, there i talked for hours about pebbles breeding whippet racing and showing, i had two years going around different tracks getting to know

people then in 2006 i got to know john and sharon down at stanbrough and that's when i had me first racing whippet shropshire lass (skystorm x lost link ) always in the con's finals but i didn't care becouse she always did me proud,2007 was a big change found meself on me own with 3 dogs.this was the big turning point do i go back to footie or go down the new path.so on the 29.4.10 percy was born

breakingbury triple seven x matchington summersweet 2010 was a good year got into racing in a big way, took on alot of good advice,

and thanks to whippet racing my life as turn out ok,looking forward to 2013 bring on my next pup arthur (one of us x ellies dutchess blue at ryamber) and thats the reason i got into whippet racing..

Good one Chris, just shows you how important it is to meet the right people to get into the sport. Sounds like it also done you a favour  . Good luck with the pup, hope you're gonna bring you mob down to Honeyhills and Harvel this year.

My family raced & worked lurchers years ago, At the shows we ocasionally met a member of West Cornwall who raced whippets and his whippet cross at Lurcher shows, In 1996 we had 1 of our lurchers pinched & myself and my father drifted out of it. Over the next few years our other lurchers died off.

In 1999 my father attended West Cornwall and in 2000 had Cornish Molly off of Mick & Angie Sawyer, the following year I Had Cornish Fly off of Dave & Chris Woollett. With a whippet each we both had the bug.I bred off of Fly in 2008 and now have Cornish Flame. And also Rch Cornish Tinker From Ken & Heather How.

When I met Rob he had always had whippets as pets, I fell in love with his boy Ollie and when he passed away in 1998 we looked to find a new pup, Rob's mum was getting on and wished for a small whippet so we were encouraged to go for a racing line. A number of phone calls across the country put us in touch with Angie & Mike Sawyer who just happened to live up the road from us. We visited on christmas eve that year and Iffy (Duncton Spirit) came to live with us soon after. At this point we still had no plans to race and it was a chance visit to Marlborough over a year later when we decided to call on Iffy's breeders and they encouraged us to come along to a meeting - a few weeks later we attended Andover for the first time, it was a wet day, one of those when everyone stayed in their cars and Rob was bored. Luckily I was able to persuade my Mum to come with me the next time and despite Iffy prancing along the track like a 'gazelle' (in the word's of Tony Fuller), I got hooked and when Iffy cleared and started to race, Rob got keen too. Soon after we had Merlin (Duncton Quest) from Joyce Keable, having Merlin changed Iffy and suddenly he started running really well, winning the Sporting Championship at the end of his first proper year running. From then on there was no turning back and racing took over our lives - we have had some good times, some not so good times and now good times again after a brilliant season last year. We are so thankful that Angie & Mike were so helpful and encouraging when we first started and remain a great help and good friends today.
