Hi

Megan has never been a big eater she eats when she is hungry. She is bright bouncy and a happy girl. But recently she has got very choosy and picky and is loosing weight. She doesnt have none to lose as it is so a lost ounce really makes a difference to her waist line. She really feels the cold when out even with a thick coat on.

So how do I get her to eat more and get some meat on her skinny bones. She is fed raw but will only eat when she wants it. She has gone of most things and I will put my hand up and say I have let her get away with it as she has me wrapped around her little paw. :- "

This morning I put down a bowl of tripe and she didnt even come and see what was in the bowl. I have another dog a jack russel who isnt as bad but a very dainty eater to. She isnt thin just right for her size.

They both get lots of exercise and Megan just loves running but even after this she doesnt have a appetite.

any suggestions?

Thanks

Wendy

I do sympathise, Wendy!

Jinny has always been the most difficult, fussy feeder EVER! To my absolute shame, I have to admit that that only way I could get her to eat anything whatsoever was to feed her by the forkful.

I would make up her food (raw lamb mince, lambs liver cut up small, wafcol bonemeal and grated cheese) and take it outside onto the patio and sit on the steps and feed her by forking a bit at a time onto the patio under the noses of the GSDs in order to create some sort of competitive situation

This didn't always work 100% and, in the end, the GSDs knew that I was going to stop them eating it so they showed no interest anyway :( But at least Jinny did get some nutrition inside her and began to flourish :)

Some days Jinny wouldn't eat at all but she always seemed to make up for it every third day or so by clearing up everything! In addition to this, the GSDs have dry food down all the time in their kennel and Jinny used to go in there and nick it if she felt like it so guess that kept her going :)

The upshot of all this has been that she will NOT eat anything from a bowl - she has to eat off the floor and she has finally developed a routine eating 2 raw chicken wings in the morning (which she will only eat outside) and a teatime meal (raw mince, tripe & liver or heart etc) which she will eat after her walk. I have to tip it onto the kitchen floor and turn away or she won't eat it!

She still has access to the GSD food if she wishes to steal and she does!!!!

Strangely enough, when Ella arrived she had a good appetite but she quickly developed the same attitude to food that Jinny has and neither one of them is greedy.

This probably isn't much use to you but sometimes you have to go the extra mile with them to keep them healthy! Will Megan eat your food? Just wondered, 'cos if she's disinterested in nice smelling human food then maybe she doesn't feel very well and a blood test might be in order??

Hope you can get her eating better soon :luck: :luck: ...... if not you could always send her for therapy to the JinnyElla Health Farm for Corrective Eating :- " :- " Maybe a bit of GSD competition would work for Megan too :D

Hi Wendy

Meg is a fussy eater also - some days she'll eat enough for two then for the next few days wont eat anything (we were very worried at first - then realised its just her way) - Though in saying that if we are having something that smells good she'll hang around with those lovely big brown eyes staring up.

Even though she is in pup her behaviour re eating habits has remained the same - I've had to tempt her to eat by mixing more fresh meat with her usual food; but even then she only eats what she fancies tending to leave the usual food.

If it is a case she's not eating anything I would get a vets advice

Hope she picks up soon

Regards

Kath

Hi Wendy,

I have the same problem with Toby, his appetite goes up and down all the time, and a couple of days of going off his food shows really quickly with his weight, Ive been looking at the dorwest herbs site and they suggest malted kelp tablets which encourage a better appetite, has anybody tried them ? Id love to get some more weight on him especially for the colder months, so I think I will try the tablets.

Jill

I've got 4 boys, my first would lick the pattern off the bowl, the second didn't eat very well as a pup but grew out of it and now eats anything. I now have 2 of his sons, 1 eats anything and everything, and the other eats sometimes and not others. Like you, he has me wrapped round his paw. I do give him Dorwest malted kelp tablets but I'm not 100% convinced they help. I now cook yorkshire puddings because he likes those and also wholemeal pasta he will eat as long as its warm. He does eat tripe (although he turned his nose up this morning) so for lunch today he had tripe, 2 yorkshire puddings (aunt bessies of course!) and some pasta. Brown rice can be mixed in with the tripe to add a bit of bulk but I have increased his tripe intake because that puts on weight. I have found that he likes biscuits in his crate in the mornings when i go to work (gravy bones, cheese & ham biscuits, liver squares etc) so I tend to give him a big handful of those every morning. He likes me to feed him by hand but I'm trying to get out of that because its such a bad habit that I have got him into.

I have really worried about him but I think this makes it worse because I tend to hover around when he's eating, so now I get on and clear up the kitchen and only watch him out the corner of my eye just to stop the others eating his food (I thought the competition of others wanting his food would encourage him but he just walks away and lets them). Sorry none of this is particularly helpful to you but I thought you should know you're not alone with this problem.

I'm so pleased I'm not the only one with this problem. Rifle has been a bit better since he started on a raw food diet but some days all he will eat is his breakfast (2 chicken wings, and sometimes he only eats one and hides the other for a snack later!!). He does love a raw egg though and grated cheese as a treat.

Hi, you can lead a horse to water comes to mind, bright bouncy and happy you say, so as long as what you feed the dog is nourishing, dont worry

:luck:

:) Cooked breast of lamb. baked in the oven.

Fried mince & juices.& mixer

Baked lamd caserole.& mixer

Worked for me with a few fussy eaters, but if you only feed raw then its no good for you sorry :( my whips are now well covered

Just my opinion, raw food is the best for any dog, Stop worrying as they will pick up on your anxiety every time the food comes out. Dont feed anything between meals, Lessen, yes lessen the amount you give each meal, this will leave her hungry and more likely to want the next meal, never leave food down for them to pick at and dont be tempted to keep changing the food you give her. No HEALTHY dog will starve itself so dont try to give too much as this will overface her.

She will be fine if dont fuss over meals. Difficult i know when you think your baby is wastng away before your eyes but it will work. :luck: Jan
