OK, this might sound weird, but so far, poor Tascha hasn't had a walk for nearly a week, as she's in heat. I'm scared that male dogs will follow us home and camp outside our house.

How do you go about walking your whip when she's in heat?

Also, she seems a little more aggressive towards Mysti, not fighting, but less friendly, and totally not wanting to play as much. She just wants to lay on my bed on a blanket and sulk, the poor girl.

Any tips or ideas welcome.

The Supermodel has just been in heat.

When she's not at her peak we've driven her up the hill to a bit of forestry that no-one else really uses and walk her on the lead but I 'm aware we're really lucky.

In the city with my oldie I was too scared to take her out so she used to go for car-trips! They all seem to take to their beds too.

My girls also get period pains (I am sure) or at least look as if they do. They get very stroppy with other dogs until they are ready to mate. Then they flirt with anything.

I also drive somewhere deserted for most of the time, except the days she is so obviously ready, then we just stay home. If you cannot go out in the car, carry her as far as you can manage and the same on the way home. Definitely, do not allow her to wee in your front yard - that is leaving messages for all the local boys.

Have fun :luck:

Sienna was very sulky Andrea practically laid and sulked for two weeks, callie was more bewildered than anything else, I just let them in the garden at their peak time but I still watched them even though we have a high fence, with a little lead walk if all was quiet, it wont hurt her not going for runs for this short time(well it didn't hurt mine)

I am lucky to have flags so I was forever hosing them after they had been for a wee and the hose was ready for unwanted visitors too, but to be honest although there are a couple of dogs that wonder around here cos their owners let them we didn't have any calling.

The fact that she's sulking cos she can't go out is better than the alternative of her getting caught so I'd just bear with it, it won't be long

I find the first one is usually such a shock to them . :( Im sure they get `period `pains like we do , and we all know how grumpy that can make us ( what is now only a memory  ) . Its a good idea to take her in the car for walkies , then local dogs wont realise they have a bitch on heat around (w00t) .

Its not long , also lots of running at this time and for 12 weeks isnt good for her ( thats why greyhounds dont race for 12 weeks after a season ) some thing to do with the mucsels around the heart

Ok andrea looks like we need a mans view here as we are surrounded by pmt most of the time (w00t) we just go with the flow (pardon the pun) :b i just walk our bitches early morning & late evening when nobody is about if the bitch is covered in blood wipe her down with baby wipes before you set off

Mine too get a bit grumpy i have two in season now, one her first season she has had the right hump, and my other no bother she is just the same but had half dozen seasons so old hat to her now.

I just walk mine the same really, i do make sure i have one person to one in season though, If i'm on my own i will walk the one in season on their own, so i can pick her up, if i had to.

Usually at peak times Oh walks with the one in season, so we can still walk them all together. It seems to work well we have not had any probs yet.

PMT only lasts a couple of days Jeff, if you'e surrounded by it most of the time I'd blame the male population of the household :- " the ones over 5

Another really silly question, Tascha is massively swollen at the back end, and it seems to be aggravating her. She keeps turning round as if to nip her back end. I know they swell up, and it's not out of proportion to what I remember my JRT bitch being like, but my JRT never got angry at her back end lol.

It will be nearly impossible to walk them at all on the lead round here, as there are loads of male dogs that roam the street, what lovely caring owners they have eh?

So, it's walkies in the car, and hope that will be ok for her.

Thanks for all the tips etc, keep em coming.

Chance is like this at the moment, though no swelling of her vulva  and no blood that I've seen either, she has on the last two days of walks 'gone to attack' a jack russell and a GSD,

this is NOT like her at all, she has also had a go at Binx too, my heart was in my mouth when she went for the GSD!

normally she loves to play and chase with other strange dogs, and I have NEVER EVER heard her growl until now!

I hope this doesn't last long as I want my lovable Chance back!

she's also sulky and in her bed more than usual, she pee's loads too, and I have noticed loads of times her licking at her private parts, my two boy dog's are keeping clear of her most of the time (w00t)

I'm going to take her out for evening walks now so there's no other dogs around (hopefully) :sweating:

LOL! I'm not a man but I have to say I take my in season bitches out on their normal walks as well but then I don't generally meet many dogs where I exercise my Whippets. The only days I avoid are sunny Saturdays & Sundays when idiot Joe Public are out along the riverbank with dogs you only see about once a year!! Then, like Pennymeadow bitches, mine go out early morning and late evening.

Poor girl........

Seems such a shame they have to go through all that hassle. PLACES TIN HAT ON! Might be worth considering having her speyed if she is not going to breed. If you have to limit excercise for half of the year, it hardly seems fair to the poor thing.

Good luck

Even if the bitch comes into season every 6 months, when has 6 weeks become half of the year???? I have heard coursing and racing people say about not running a bitch for 12 weeks post-season but I do not honestly think that a pet dog having normal exercise is going to be compromised in any way healthwise if you take them out either during or after their season! Certainly has never harmed mine anyway and I take them lure coursing as well within that 12 week timespan

Bullet proof vest in situ too now!!!!! :p I had a bitch who was not chopped, developed mammory cancer at 8 years old...we never bred from her, but I wouldn't put another dog through the agro again, bitch or dog. I am not considering having Fynn neutered yet. If he is a good racer, he might be used at stud, if he is mediocre and and a humping aggressive nightmare, I will de-veg the evil white thing (this is an affectionate term for my puppy (w00t) ) Each to their own with respect

I've alway's excercised all of my bitches through their seasons :b .........If there are any stray dog's about they always have me and Inca to answer too first :- "

Books will generally tell you that bitch is in season for 3 weeks, will mate about the day 10 - day 14. However,I had two litters (from two bitches of different breeds) sired on 20th day and Morgan had recently posted a thread of her puppy which was born from mating on the 27th day. I would not stop taking precautions until the bitch is relly back to normal size, there is no discharge of any sort and she had a good bath to get any remnants of the smell off her.
