Manton WRC 37years me thinks  Over to you Karen !!!

I believe Manton started in 1970 Elise - a couple of the trophies that may have dates before that were possibly ones handed down to Manton from the Rose Forgrove whippet racing club - that was run at Gainsborough as many of the members were from Gainsborough in the early days.

Mum and Dad became involved with Manton in 1973, after the club they used to run at Shireoaks folded and in those days it was not unusual to have more than 60 dogs entered in a club handicap  They were also active workers at Kiveton Park WRC (the one that we touched on at presentation Elise ball hare bends hahahaha now that was good fun (but not for me as i was lure lass!!) and kids moan now at walkin up and down for 150yds think that was run over 240yds lol.

That'll do dont want to bore you

Yes, Manton must have started about 1970. I was racing at Rose Forgrove then and the Phillipson family were running it. It later closed and I like others moved and ran at Manton.

Later I moved to the south of the country to live and was a founder member of Fordingbridge. This club started in 1983 so has been running for 33 years now. Its membership and dogs running is very sad to when it started, then about 40 dogs turned up, now we are lucky to get 6 or 7.

Most people use the club now to train their dogs for open racing.

Sorry for the error above - Fordingbridge has been going for 23 years NOT 33 as stated.

Lancaster WRC has been running as a lure racing club since 1968-- when the BWRA was formed -before that as far back as the early fifties i can remember rag racing on the Quay Meadow and before that down at Morecambe-a small dog then was about 40lb and rough haired dogs ran along side smooth haired they ran up tapes that were set about a yard apart in lanes no muzzels unless they were fighters and if they jumped lanes were disqualifed much harder to school then than now--- Easter Monday was the big handicap day ----it saw ten bookies at Lancaster track some who owned dogs themselves---wagers were the order of the day 100 pound bets even in those days on two dogs were not unusual---this was when the club boasted 100+ dogs running twice weekly --and times were around 9-30 average for 150 yards---if you had a dog that could do less than 9 seconds on the old Lancaster track it was a good un a bit special--- twice the size they are now that are nearer 8 seconds--how things change --not many cars so club racing flourished ---The Good Old Days.

The South East Club has been in excistance since the year Two Thousand. Arthur and I tried along with Terry Brett and Jimmy Watson for weeks to find a Council or private land to set up a club on as the South was gradually going into exinction and their was still a few of us left with good animals.

Arthur and Jimmy Watson were on their way to a farm in Kent to look at a potenial piece of land as I phoned Thurrock Council and I could not believe my ears when the as the Leisure Manager at Thurrock said he knew of a Rugby Field that might be able to accomodate us. What a godsend that turned out to be, our membership has from around twelve members to the present day when it is around forty and still growing and long may it continue.

When we first came into the sport their were six clubs in the South all well supported, it was as hard to qualify for the BWRA Championships as it is to get a title nowdays. Let's hope with the latest BWRA Committee bringing a new format that that the good days return in time to come.

About 10 years for A & T Miners. Westhoughton & Preston both folded & Lancaster wasn't running regular handicaps leaving us with no-where proper to train our dogs, we had the whippet traps from Westhoughton but a few years later had brand new ones made. We originally started running at a rugby club down the road but the ground and facilities weren't up to much, we found a suitable spot on the football field at Gin Pit and the welfare club were very supportive of us and helped us out lots.

We've managed to get a lot of new members into the club since we started and everything seems to be going well for the future with a lot of new pups.
