Hello,

Just wanted some advice on how old a pup should be before taking them away on holiday.

I would like to organise a camping trip and just wondered because I want to take the pup with us! I will wait until she is old enough though..... But dont know how old 'old enough' is!!

I will start getting her used to the car from day one as the nicest places to walk are short ride away.

And won't be going too far for the first trip :))

theyre never too young to start the car trips and as soon as they are over the injections socialising with the outside world mine will be having their first camping trip at 1 week old confined to the caravan with mum of course

There were some 14 weeks old puppies at our camp site the other week.

A couple who are having one of our pups asked a similar question.

We advised that they wait until he is at least 16 weeks old and has his house training cracked etc

I would go for it as soon as they have had their injections  We're taking ours camping which we have never done before so we will start by taking them for one night only and not too far away. Its always worth considering that you might have a really car sick pup so short journeys may be best. Molly would be sick even on the way to the vets which is about 5 mins away  whereas Lenny isn't car sick at all, ever. Molly grew out of it at about 1 year old, not totally though, she puked the other day on the way up to Malham which is only an hour and a quater drive! You should've seen the state of her after a 4 and a half hour drive to wales :x

I'd get the toilet training well underway first otherwise you'll be continually worrying about them peeing in the tent, on sleeping bags and won't be able to relax properly etc. Whippet pups aren't always the fastest pups for picking up toilet training, and accidents are not uncommon upto 6 months of age (and even beyond in some cases...believe me I speak from experience (w00t) ) :- "

I think car travelling would be an issue as well. If you can cope with travel sickness, and a car loaded with camping gear, then not such a problem I guess. You'll need quite a few rest stops on the journey with a younger pup, especially if they are going to suffer travel sickness (very common with pups and youngsters).

I do sound very negative (as usual  ), but it just depends how much time you want to spend looking after them/worrying about them/cleaning up after them on your break. If this isn't an issue, and you can take it all in your stride, then I can't see a problem with taking them from about 16 weeks onwards (I'll stick with Rachel's advice on age :b ).

I personally wouldn't take them until about 6 months (Logi was this age when we went to Ireland) as like Nicola says there is so much to worry about and I think upsetting their routine at an early age could be a mistake.

But, if you really do want to go earlier then as I said by 16 weeks I would expect your pup will be pretty much 100% on the house training side of things.

We must have been very lucky with all of ours, as by 12 weeks accidents were very few and far between. The pups (7 weeks) no longer poo in their pen but hold on to go outside and only wee on the paper in their pen. Clever little babies! :huggles:

if you use a creat at home then camping is eay just stick to the same routine as home i have taken all mine as soon as they have had there firts jabs with no problems They were trained to empty on grass at home so by the time they had the jabs and were out and about at 12 weeks there houestraining was fine and I just keepd everything the same camping.. Mine all love it now thye minet they see the tent bag out from under the stares or the traler being washed there so excited. theres lot of us on here going camping so I am sure you will have planety of advice. about what you ned to take when your ready to go

We took ours from 6 months.Helpful if you can fit a cage in,as our pup was a monkey for sneaking out under the tent.We had great fun,and now take all 3 camping. They have their own air bed,a bigt duvet, and we all pile in.I love it,as they do not go on the beds at home.Great for cuddling up to when its cold too.

Amandax

I would take mine as soon as they are jabbed if I was going then, we go away in the caravan and their first hol was May they were 15 weeks old,and they were brill :huggles: everything we do they do, I think thats why they fit into everything we do unfased, I personally think its better to get puppies used to as much as you can while they are young that way they are confident with changes as they come

If they wee in the tent it'll clean

And I agree about the crate very good idea :)

Have a nice time :)

Thank you so much for all of your replies.

My dad has now asked us if we would like to go to Wales with him in August, my uncle has a caravan there.

I think I am just gonna see how we go as I will not need to book anything for that.

I'm not desparate to go really, just thinking bout it! If pup has settled in well then maybe we will give it a go, if not we will just wait a few months, either way its gonna be great fun having her around!!

Thanks again

ahhhh...now I don't call caravanning 'camping' in the true sense  . I pictured tents, ground sheets, and sleeping bags all on the floor. My OH is unfortunately very proud of his camping gear, accumulated over many years, all lightweight, expensive gear (well it's his hobby afterall). :- " If a pup wee'd on one of our thermarests or sleeping bags, or nipped a hole in the 'would stand up to a gale on Everest' tent, he wouldn't be too pleased.

I'd go for it if she settles in with you fairly quickly; I probaby worry about things too much, and am too keen on a good routine :- "

Lol yes caravanning is cheating! My dad is like that, he has 4 tents now, a mini fridge, lamps, stoves, bedding and all sorts!! We were planning a proper camping trip but will probably go next year with friends. Think it will be easier to look after pup in the caravan where she can't escape!!

We will see, I also worry too much, I am sure she will be fine if she has settled

Thanks

Carla

I would say as soon as they are clear with their jabs.

Sidney's first holiday was on a boat on the Norfolk broads.. it was brilliant and he wore a life vest too

Where ever you go and do have a fab time

I would have thought getting them out and about the minute they finish their jabs and experiencing as many things as possible so they are thoroughly socialised is the one thing you can do to make them into the sort of dogs that can go anywhere

Our next holiday will probably be in a caravan at the end of September and I am SO excited at being able to take MY dog with me :b We often go to the Lake District and have a few friends there who we'll visit for a day or stay with and I've often felt a tad left out as they'll all be yabbering away about machines and gadgets *yawn* - at least now that I have Tina I can make my escape
