We picked up our second whippet this weekend - he is a 10 week old male called Finley and we absolutely adore him already! Well nearly all of us. We already have a 2 year old male whippet and he keeps looking at Finley, sniffing him and then either staring at him in a way that he looks like he may attack him or completly ignoring him. Is this normal? Will our first boy come round to him? Any suggestions on how we may get the two to become buddies would be grately appreciated

make sure your new pup doesnt pester him all the time, let him have his own chill out space where puppy cant follow. also, when the pup gets a bit ott, tell him off in front of your elder dog. puppies can be totally obnoxious, and do need to learn their place within the pack hierachy. finlay is at the bottom, and has to be made aware of this. little tricks like who you feed first etc will help reinforce this. another point is that you, as pack leader, should be the one making the rules. not only in putting finlay in place, but in reassuring your first dog. if he knows that YOU wont allow finlay to rule the roost (which is hard, because everyone wants to cuddle with puppies :huggles: ) he will be less likely to show aggression and take things into his own hands.

and, most importantly.......can you post some pics? please? :D

Many thanks for that advice. We have to buy a new charger for our digital camera, as soon as we have this we will post some pics of the two boys (hopefully by that time - the best of friends).

good luck :luck: with them both,im sure things will settle down soon.

Hiya,

This is an interesting one as we're looking at getting another whip pup as a friend to our 9 month old and I had the same question you have asked go through my mind last night 'I wonder what Sidney will think to the new arrival when we get him'

Please let me know how you get on and anything you have tried that seems to of worked :)

Thanks

When Spry came we already had 8 month old twins, and I worried a addition might rock the boat a bit at first because they did everything together, but she was so confident she didnt give them a chance to ignore her and they quickly became a threesome, then came kane he and Spry are best mates (not at the moment though because she's in season) (w00t) but he plays with callie too, sienna on the other hand is a bit bossy with him she is top dog and will only play with him if she wants to she has told him off a couple of times , but pretty much ignores hime the rest of the time :(

I'm sure they will be fine once they have gotten used to each otherI find all mine l love each others company but sometimes they just need to get used to it

Hi ,

congrats on your new pup

Just wanted to say that im sure they will be fine - they just need time. I had my 2nd whippet bitch when our 1st was a year old, Althought Holly ( older whip) was never nasty towards Willow she was very 'wary' of her.

Whenver Willow jumped on the settee next to Holly or went to lay in Hollys bed with her Holly would just look at willow like she was some kind of alien and run off!  much to willows dismay cause she really wanted to just cuddle up and play with her new sister!!

Anyways, in about a months time they were alot closer and now they are inseperable! playing together, cuddeling up together, getting up to mischeive together!

I think someone said before that young pups have a certian 'odour' on them that tells other dogs to back off abit too. Like a protective smell.

Good luck and look forward to seeing some pics hopefully! :luck:

Ditto.............And a year on, mine are firm friends and a real proper pack. Never leave them unsupervised, and if they fight, keep an eye, but don't intervene unless it looks serious. I used to put a big duvet on the floor and watch my two rolling around growling and neck grabbing, but the older one always inhibited his bite, and actually, they broke down barriers by physical contact and the youngster learnt his position in the pecking order. I'm sure they'll be fine

Thanks for the replies

The advice and details that everyone has given is exacly how the two are acting. Looking forward to being a few weeks on in the bonding process and watching their friendship and partnership grow :huggles: I get the feeling that once they get closer they will be up to all sorts of mischief :p

Many thanks again

Karen
