hi everyone,

im new on here today,i have recently rehomed a ex racer,she is doing really well on commands etc in the garden,she will come back first time,would like to let her off when across the fields,just wondering how long to keep her on lead.?will post some pictures soon but they dont give you many kb.

Firstly I'd just like to say 'Congratulations' and a big 'thank you' for giving a retired Greyhound a home

 

How long have you had her?

Do you have other dogs (With good recall?) Is she good with other dogs?

 

I foster greyhounds and just love them but recall can take a while.

 

I go to the fields with a lead which is about 50-60ft long and gradually give them more and more while calling them back for a very tasty treat.

 

Be choosy of where you take her for her first training and off lead runs. Little distractions!!

 

I also have a very naughty Whippet who will bugger off at the first sight of a rabbit and NOTHING will stop her.

we have had her about three weeks now,we have a old dog a collie/ X spaniel,now seventeen years old,she isnt too good at recall as she is going deaf,blind etc.The greyhound is very good on recall,but im sure if she saw a rabbit she might not listen.she has met a few dogs while out and just wants to play,we met a friend with a terrier,but did it from opposite sides of a fence just incase,things went well,so they now play in our garden together,cats are a different subject if they get into garden.

I agree, if she was to see a rabbit she'd be off so you need to train her/discourage not to start the chase (bit difficult)

Once she has started the chase you can probably forget any chance of her coming back until she's ready!!

 

Can I ask how old she is and how long did she race for? What was the reason for retiring her?

she was rehomed with us on 11-05-07 she last raced 9-05-07,she was rehomed due to her not being up to kennels requirements(too slow)

Hi. I have got 3 ex racers One raced alot over a short space of time but then must have been injured cos she has a big scar on her side and a toe missing! One has no races showing on greyhound data but might have been used for flapping - she is VERY keen, even though she is ten now and has aches and pains, and one is :b well.... a bit thick so has never raced. Bless her! she hasnt got a clue about whats going on around her. I only let mine off if I know Im in an enclosed space just in case they see something and run off, :lol: except for the last one who only runs in circles!!! :- "

I kept mine on the lead for a year. I started by using a long rope (25metres), my husband would walk to one end of the field and call the dog and it would run to him. Just before he walked away he gave a treat so that they were in no doubt that he had more food. We gradually increased the distance and then removed the rope. No problems so far, but we are very careful and choose space well away from roads, barbed wire and livestock. I find that chicken, liver or cheese work wonders if you have a greedy dog.

I kept mine on lead for about a year too due to his bieng so nervous. I kinda got a feeling when it might be ok and then gradually talked myself into it. He loves bieng off lead although plays at being extremely deaf when it suits him . Good luck. shes lovely :wub:

I've only had mine 4 weeks myself, but I'm waiting until he is a bit better around other dogs before we go get a long lead to start practising with him. Ours still barks and pulls towards other dogs, although he ignores about 40% of them now, so we're making progress!
