We run our dogs for a bit of fun at these shows. If we win it's an added bonus. It's great entertainment and good exercise for the dogs.

I have a little beddy x whippet - only 18" and she always enters the coursing - my other half often gets laughed at for entering her. We hear the mutterings of it's a terrier not a lurcher and it shouldn't be running, or that'll never win, why's he bothering. It's all about having a good day out with your friends and meeting like minded people. And yes, my dogs work, well we take them out lamping etc some people would argue that's not a working dog.

hi deb fair play to you it is all a bit of fun and the ones that laugh at your little dog have never seen him work im sure they are little dogs with big hearts

robert

:) I agree with you both, especially Debs, my dogs run for fun and i love to see it, both myself and Steve have never been afraid of competition, but then our dogs aren't any great competition to any breed, My two little ones are Whippetxbeddy but because they look like whippets i get all the comments, what i say is (run your dogs against mine and you will see that they are NO competition at all) :p Good racing everyone and keep the sport alive. Diane.

i like going to shows with my dog, since the hunting season is over you might as will get the dogs out at shows it a day out for yourself and the dog, people say showing dogs cant be hunting dogs, isn't there a rabbiting class and a working class, might as well go along for the fun off it and its good crack.

vicky :)

I love going to the shows for the craic and the banter, but I go to win :- " :- " and if they want to give me a trophy Im happy to take it off them   Even better when there is prize money

Lurcher shows & racing were started for a social get together in the summer when the hunting season was over. Some shows still have this feel to them, I'm going to 1 this weekend at the Old Berks hunt.

I enter my Beddie/Whippet in coursing & racing, he'll never win a straight race but he loves doing it, when it comes to working he is a champion.

Some of my other dogs who race also work, apart from my Deerhound cross who looks at the lure as it disappears up the field with disdain "where's it's legs?" (w00t)

Some people are breeding lurchers specifically for showing which will never see a rabbit etc, I just feel sorry for some of them as they're not even let off their leads or are exercised on treadmills.

There are also dogs bred only to race, that's the breeders choice, but there are still plenty of all rounder type dogs that are entered for fun.

working , showing , racing ,whats all the fuss , some owners , (myself included ) go to a show , primarilly to race the dogs ,after weve shown them , it's great fun just to watch your dog in hot persuit of the lure , yes it's good to win , but it's the taking part that counts , you cant win all the time , so when you do win it's very sweet indeed

I have 4 lurchers all working, we take them to the shows over the summer cos it's a good day out 4 us as a family, we race, show and course them, it's great if they get placed but we know they love the race, but they know the difference between chasing a plastic bag in a straight line and coursing a rabbit.
