Hi

Since I started feeding my two whips tripe they have become increasingly giddy and hyper. So much so that I've had to put them back onto their old food for the moment, I cant cope!!!!!!!!!!

Am I doing it wrong. I give them Red Mills tracker with a bit of water and oil in the morning and minced tripe/beef & tripe in the evening (half a pack of that AMP frozen stuff or same quantity of free flow mince). I even think perhaps I'm not giving them enough.

They've gone back onto tinned butchers tripe for the moment until they calm down.

I started to feed the raw to try and improve their coats. I haven't seen any improvement yet but its only been a few weeks. Should I persist with it and just get up earlier to give them more exercise?

Does anyone have any advice for me?? They are driving me nuts

I would have thought the complete feed was more likely to send them doolally rather than the tripe!

No definitely not the tripe, as advised by others on K9 its more likely to be the additives in the other foods you are feeding or even some of the biscuits or treats.

If not the additives then the colourants.

Redmills traker is a complete feed. And should be fed on it's own. However IMO redmills traker doesn't contain enough protein for working dogs only dogs at rest. i.e racing greyhound bitches during there season. I'd personally recommend the redmills working dog which is 24% protein, or you can mix 1 part redmills racer to 1 part redmills tracker.

withhold the tripe and other foods especally the oil, redmills put enough oil in there feeds.

I only feed my bitch once in the evening around 6 pm i find it settles her for the evening.

However you didn't mention how old your dogs are, younger dogs require more frequent feeding.

I had the same problem and withheld everything apart from the redmills and it's worked for me. My bitch looks a picture of health and she's just had 10 puppies !!

(during pregnancy and rearing she was fed redmills racer)

Aren't Whippets usually hyper???? (w00t)

Mine are always giddy and the only way i know if something is wrong is when they are quiet!!!

I wouldnt expect its the tripe thats affecting them but i know with Diamond, when im defrosting it, she will sniff and whine and run around like a loonatic until she gets it.

Try giving them a bit more if you feel its not enough, you will soon be able to judge how much is enough for them. Remember their appetitie will change according to the weather.

How old are they? Mine have a mixture of Racer and Tracker, 1/2 and 1/2 in their dish all the time until they are about 12 months old, dried, so they can help themselves whilst they are growing.

Mine also have Red Mills Racer soaked in Veg Broth in the afternoon and Tripe and biscuits in the evening(Butchers Tripe if no frozen Tripe, i dont think it harms them every now and then, but i tend to add more biscuits if giving tinned meat).

If you are really bothered by their hyperactivity then i would take them off the Red MIlls for a bit to see if its that, and find an alternative that contains nothing artificial.

So would I, but they were ok on the red mills before I introduced the tripe. Perhaps they are more giddy because they are happy I'm giving them proper food now :D

I'm definately going to keep them on the tripe and possibly switch to a different dried food, just a mixer biscuit I think would be better. Mind you, it says on the red mills that you can mix tracker with fresh meat as well.

I wish it wasn't so complicated, I just want whats best for them

They are 6 months and a year old by the way. The one year old only really eats anything substantial once a day, the 6 month one will eat anything and everything!!

I do not think it is the food, they are just in that hyperactive "teenager" age. They will settle down again, in time. :) :luck:
