Well, I tried. We are on the Bodensee in Germany and there is a wildlife reserve with lots of birds. Mr F noticed the one in the photo below was keeping very close to the yellow buoy. Sorry the photo is blurry, it's too bright sunshine here to get it on my phone.

Out with the binoculars and we could see a cord from the buoy round its neck. It's about 50 metres from the shore. So I put on a swimsuit, tied a pair of scissors round my neck and hoped the bird had seen the YouTube videos of animals being really calm while being rescued.

I swam out to it and it was still being quite calm, which I took as a good sign. Then I found out why. Plastic ducks tend not to panic! Who thought it was a good idea to put a freakin' PLASTIC bird where people might think it needed help! But I suppose it's the thought that counts ...

'Live' may not be the best word to use in the same sentence as 'Mr F' right now ...

Oh blimey! What an anti-climax, but you're right, you did the right thing (I do wonder if someone was hiding somewhere filming your rescue attempt ).

It's now become a 'thing' with other people swimming out to the plastic bird and lifting it out of the water. I wonder how often this happens. At least all the other campers have a good story to tell their friends when the get home - 'then this daft woman got in the water, swam out and ... '

At least you cared enough to try.
Last year while out walking OH and I saw a swan with what looked like a yellow plastic bag round its neck. OH called the animal rescue while I tried to get a good look through the camera.. the plastic had numbers on it and as I gave the news to OH he was being told by a very amused animal officer that this is a tag so that scientists can track the swans movements...
    Oops
