Hello,

I'm wondering if you can help me, specifically with advice.

I've wanted to own a dog for a long time, but as I work full time I have never got one as it wouldn't be fair to leave them alone for 9 hours a day. However a friend of mine has made a suggestion, she already owns a GSD, and she's offered to look after the dog during my working days. Therefore I would have it for the weekends and some evenings during the week. Essentially it'll be an extended version of dog sitting.

My primary concern is, without sounding selfish, I want the dog to form a closer bond with me over my friend. Are there any breeds that lend themselves to this kind of situation? I also have two cats (as does my friend) so the dog would need to cope well with other animals.

I know this is a bit of an unusual situation, but if I got a dog rest assured it will be well looked after and well exercised on the weekends.

I'd appreciate any help and advice you can offer me. Also I'd like to know your thoughts about this as well.

Thanks in advance.

my only concerns with this agreement would be what if you fall out, one of you moves away, something happens to the dog who has final say over treatment/decision making etc

Is it not possible for you to have the dog yourself and get a dog walker to come for an hour in the middle of the day then your dog is only home alone for 3-4 hrs then walked then home to sleep for a couple of hours until you come home from work.

I am not trying to put you off getting a dog but I know people who shared a horse and it was difficult at times. :luck: Good Luck whatever you decide to do.

When you say 'some' evenings in the week does this mean you're not always there?

As you know a dog is a big commitment and if you have a puppy an even bigger one!

Me and my partner took 4 weeks off work between to settle our puppy into our home and we alternate shifts with work so he isn't on his own all day.

You need to think whether you actually have the time to put the effort in! Clearly you have the willing the choice is up to you!

Good luck your decision
