Since you've been racing for decades in the UK I want your opinion and advice.

We've recently formed a whippet racing club in Australia. Our track is fantastic, 350mts straight grass.

we are still evolving, so far we have only had one comp where we ran whippets hand slipped in pairs over 150mts with the winner going on to the next round.

Long term I hope to have fields of at least 4 jump from the boxes & run the full distance.

We have allowed both ped & non peds to join.

My own hope is that eventually we'll run them separately, peds against peds, non peds against non peds. I would love it if one day the pedigree acheivements were recognised by the canine authority & pedigree people. Maybe one day, probably after I am long dead we will actually have some genuine pedigree racing lines here.

When I used to race at Tooradin, they all ran together in graded races from 1 fastest to 5 slowest. They were graded based on times. I know there's lots of different ways to race, I think you have weight classes?? and handicap races dont you?

What are the different racing systems & what do you think is best?

Linda

I'll leave the advice to the experts, just wanted to say good luck with it :) :luck: :luck:

We run 2 handycaps at our club. A yard per pound and a time handy cap for the big dogs. The ypp are weight in and run in races of 3 from traps over a distance od 150 or 160 yds. So you might have a 26lb, 20lb and 16lb. The 26lb would run off scr the 23lb of 3yds and the 16lb off 6yds and so on with the winner going into the next round. When we have opens we run upto 5 dogs depending on that weight group entry.

For a new club starting up with a limited amount of runners i would say run off time, this way every dog stands a decent chance of winning.

Nettle  thanks!

Sharon,

I do find it confusing, the bigger dogs get put back dont they? I know that often the littlies are much faster, well they are over here, not always but some of those biggies are real lumps & need time to wind up over distance.

Vicky what do you mean 'off time' do you mean to grade them on their times?

What do you call a limited amount of runners? What sort of system would you suggest with more runners? I wish I could come over there for an educational visit :)

I feel we'll probably grade on times eventually but not sure, maybe a combination of times & weight classes, just so the little ones aren't lumped together with the big heffalumps, (although I am still trying to understand the advantages/disadvantages of the different systems) I was always worried about that where I used to race, some of the big dogs just ran straight over the top of Kibah & she came back covered in footprints even though she didn't fall

Anyway thanks all for your suggestions, keep them coming it's much appreciated.

i think abc racing is fairer and run at yd perlb or 2ft perlb as all winners then run for A final all 2nds for B final etc as to me still lets best dogs win but gives others chance to win lower finals so keeps most happy
