Well done to you Wendy for going to such trouble to find the owners.  It really is a disgrace that all those people you phoned were not bothered or just wouldn't help.

That's disgusting, the situation for stray dogs is really worrying in some part of the country

I've been in the same situation - I picked up a Lab recently that was running along the main road in the traffic. That was on a Friday night, there was no Dog warden on duty until Monday morning and the police didn't want to know. Luckily I also managed to track down the owner, otherwise goodness knows what I'd have done with him, he wasn't dog-friendly so I couldn't have kept him here.

Legally, the only person allowed to take in strays is the Dog Warden - but if there isn't one in your area or you can't get hold of them Gawd knows what you are supposed to do. Although the law changed recently so the police no longer have any legal duty to take in strays, in some areas where there is no other 'out of hours' cover by a Dog Warden they do still keep some holding kennels and will take in strays and then pass them on to the local pound.

The RSPCA often get bashed for not helping with strays, but they aren't legally allowed to take in stray dogs nor are any other independent rescues unless they happen to have the council stray contract for their area and act as a pound as well. It's a nightmare for anyone finding or looking for a dog to know who to contact.

what we couldnt beleve was nobody wanted to take any details incase the owner tryed to contact them and all said contact the dog warden. then were told we dont have a dog warden so what are you supposed to do. the owner was allso trying to phone and leave details at teh same places we were and getting the same respons. if it hadnt been for westhounton dog track knowing who owned the dog it would still be here and there would be an owner still looking for her

Incredible!!!

They'd soon be interested if the dog had bitten a child or killed a pet so why not any concern in trying to find the owner before a problem arises!!!!!

Well done you two, for helping reunite a lovely dog with it's family

Well done Wendy , good job you knew what you were doing . The whole situation for stray dogs is a disgrace :(

I found a dog recently near a main road near my mums. It was around 21:00. I caught the dog who was rather frightened but not at all nasty. I put him in the cage in the back of the car and took him to my mums. Well I walked up the road trying to find the owner, saw three people but he didn't belong to them and they had tried to catch him themselves but couldn't. Luckily I always carry a spare lead. The dog had a collar but no ID disk. I phoned the police who were quite helpful. I told them that I knew they wouldn't take him but had anyone reported one missing. They hadn't, all that was reported was a Cocker Spaniel and this was a Collie X. The police asked if I could keep the dog over night and call the Dog Warden the next morning. This was Friday so the DW probably wouldn'y have been woking anyway. I remembered just in time that the holding kennels was only 10 minutes away so told the police that I would take him there. Mum rang kennels to let them know I was bringing the dog over. When I arrived they kennels were on the phone to the dogs owner but they had to wait until the next day to collect him. The dog had been rehomed from the kennels in the first place and it was the second time that week that he had escaped. The owners apparetly were arguing about whether to collect the dog or have it rehomed as it was going to cost £45 to get him back. Wouldn't you think that having paid out that amount earlier in the week they would have watched him more carefully?
