Do you agree with this, those of you that have experience of these beautiful dogs?

I went to the discover dogs show and my children and I feel in love with the IG's. Apart from the fact that you have to wait years and years to actually get one of these dogs, I was told that my family wasnt suitable anyhow because my younger son is 8.

I wondered what you think.

ALSO - what is your advice about getting onto a waiting list? After all, my youngest will be 12 in four years..... (w00t)

think the age of th chld depends on how sensible the child is, ? Some younger ones are a lot more sensible than some a lot older.

"edited to ad the missing letters lol" (must be my age :p )

I have homed quite a few Iggies with younger children. Mark is right it is the type of children that count and they are vetted more than the parents. Here is Doris's son Kieron, I think he was younger than 8 when they had their first Iggie.

You do have to be careful with Iggie puppies but mine are allowed to run and play in a large area as soon as they show any inclination to leave the whelping box. Unfortunately with some of the bloodlines you cannot do that but I prefer to breed puppies that can lead normal lives and if they get slagged off by the breed people for being too heavy or too big or too anything I couldn't care less (and those who know me will know how true that statement is :- " )

Kitty you are more than welcome to come visit and meet my iggies and Alfie is just around the corner so you could meet Alice and Norman too.

They are also fully integrated with the other dogs as soon as possible.

And they stay gorgeous too

It really does seem to depend on who you speak to with regards to the IG's suitability with children. :- "

Some lines are very fragile and prone to breaking legs just by jumping off the sofa or running in the garden, so it obviously follows that those are not suitable to live with even the most sensible children- or anyone else for that matter :- "

In my opinion, the breeders are directly responsible for the bone problems in those lines, perpetuating the problem by continually breeding from dogs which have broken their legs. If a dog has broken it's leg doing something like jumping off furniture etc, rather than a more serious accident, then I would say it has a bone problem and should not be bred from, since its offspring will more than likely break legs as well. :(

A lot of IG breeders seem to accept the leg breaking problem as the norm, rather than the exception, and do not try to breed for stronger bone, so the problem will only get worse...

I think a dog, of any breed, should be able to live a normal dog's life, OK IGs need a little more care than some, especially when wild puppies, but if allowed to run and jump, they will build up muscle and bone density, which helps to prevent leg breaks.

My Alice's sister Flora was a present for my friend's 6 year old daughter to do mini agility with   AND her son was only 3 at the time-BUT the children knew how to behave with dogs from the start.

IGs absolutely love children, and make wonderful companions if the children are sensible.

OK I'll stop going on now...

I'm biased cos I got iggies and kiddies, but I believe that my iggies have been a great addition to our household, and that we have been not bad as iggies owners

just to support the cause, I'm now going to add loads of pictures showing loads of happy moments our family would never of had it we we not lucky enough to find 2 fantastic girls who run, jump, climb, shout, sing, chase anything that moves, cuddle, snuggle and generally do what dogs were ment to do!!

this is my first family photo of the kids with the whippets and our 1st iggie, Genie - my boys were of the shockingly young ages of 10 and 5 :- "

how nice to see a topic on igs which is positive and upbeat

here is a goodie - Genie is not getting involved, she has given up her place to my little niece who was about 2 at the time!

it might be a good time to say what I think about kids and dogs living together - watch how kids behave with their parents! If they act like brats in front of you when their parents are around, think what they act like at home with them!

I probably sound like a bossy, grumpy old bag, but in my house they adults are in charge, whether they are my kids or someone elses, the kids do as they are told

and yes, that goes for the iggies too!!!!!!!! :- "

totally unrelated, but couldn't resist!!

found these when looking through the old photos - my old man, bless him, said that he must of been sitting in the garden in the middle of the night cos he was either very sad or very tired :- "
