and more up to date, from the summer, my 16 and 11 year old sons, who were just 8 and 3 when we got our first whippet, and 10 and 5 when we got our first italian greyhound, and my 7 year old niece, who has never known any different!

hi sue thanx 4 the reply a have been wondering about iggys a have heard all diff views on them. did you get any of my pics a sent you?my computer crashed and a lost alot of stuff.kelly

:)) :)) :))

doris, and Jan, and everyone - what a lovely thread, what fantastic pictures!

very interesting too, about the breaking legs issue, I do think it is very sensible to consider the fragility as a problem and not to breed it on. I guess there is a whole IG culture here full of different points of view, that I know nothing about. :- "

Jan, thanks for your kind offer of visiting .....where are you? I live in London, btw.

Hi Kitty, we are just up the M40 north of Oxford. Get Christmas and New Year out the way and come visit,

Great pics Doris!

I have always wanted an Iggy but really needed to live with one for a while to decide whether I wanted one or not. There is a breeder here who has kindly given me one to show for a little while and to live with me and the whippets to see how we all manage.

Now, somewhere along the line, someone has to give you the opportunity to be a beginner. How can you ever become an experienced owner of a breed if no-one gives you the chance to be a beginner. (I noticed on 'that other thread' that someone said Iggies are not a breed for beginners). (w00t) Every experienced Iggy owner had to be a beginner at some stage.

What you have to do is listen carefully to the advice of your breeder. Take heed of what they say about the breed and how they are.

Take stock of your children and how they are and be honest with yourself about whether or not they would suited to this kind of dog.

As for Iggies that break legs from jumping down off furniture .... what are those breeders THINKING, perpetuating a problem like that? That's not responsible breeding and then to put the responsibility on to the new owners to have to wrap the dog in cotton wool and not let it live with children etc ... well!

This thread has been fascinating as my OH has been going on for ages about how interested he is in them and how he would like to meet one (any chance Jan :- " ), and we have both really enjoyed the great pics, especially the ones showing how tiny they are compared with whips.

There is one question I have been wondering about- I have read in lots of posts that they are impossible to house train over night- is this really true- what do you do- and why do you think this is so?

 sorry about all the questions, they are just such a beautiful and fascinating little breed

Hi Olivia,

You will have seen my IG Norman at lure coursing at Radway in the summer- his first time and he loved it! He lost the lure half way round so ended up doing one and a half circuits!

It's a shame that IGs are in the toy group in this country so he's not allowed to compete, and can only do fun runs. He's been Afghan racing as well, and completed a 250m circuit in a quicker time than most of the Afghans! So much for IGs and their fragile legs :- " Must admit he is a big boy though...

You are welcome to come and visit Normie and Alice, and I live literally 30 seconds from Jan, so you could meet hers too, even the Scarlet Pimpernel aka George! o:)

Liz and the Monellis

P.S. If anyone had told me before I got an IG that 6 years later I would still be picking up soiled newspapers 3 or 4 mornings a week, I would have laughed at them! Whereas a Whippet would be mortified at having an accident indoors, the IGs just don't seem to care!

Hi Olivia, yes by all means come and visit. Just be warned though Iggie Bitches are real floozies with men and you may end up with an OH like Doris's who looks longingly into a pair of dark liquid eyes at every oppurtunity (and they wont be yours  ) Boy do they know how to flirt.

As to the house training wellllllllllllllll, Shelley who I bred is very clean and always has been but on the whole they are dirty little buggers. George is now clean since he had his dingle dangles off but Hattie will not use the dog flap.

I believe Doris and Zillott still both experience the early morning trip across the minefield or should I say kitchen.

doris i love that pic of a big strong man (your hubs)cradling the two little iggys.fab piccie

Oops I'm a late-comer to this wonderful thread but I'm about the set some hearts in mouths.

I have Zoomie (the K9 Iggie    ) and he lives in Scotland with four whippets and a bouncy labrador. He was bred beautifully and fantastically by Jan Doherty and I love him utterly to bits. He does love the kids he meets but they are entirely supervised by me (I don't have kids of my own).

Anyway, here he is on a freezing day with his fleecy jacket on. The only weather he really hates is wind but he goes bonkers in the snow. My OH was photographing his labrador on some haybales and Zoomie got in on the act.... not only did he jump up there by himself but he jumped off by himself too and he's strong and fit enough to do that. Don't think I'm not carefull with him ie he doesn't spend too long in the snow or he'd freeze hit tootsies, but I've allowed his natural development as much as possible.

He still makes a HUGE mess at night, demands a lot of people contact and barks at everything that moves so I absolutely agree they are not the breed for everyone and just because they're cute it's not the whole story.

P.S. He's going to Crufts and one of my neighbours thinks he's so wonderful she's coming along for the trip. Would love to meet more of you there.

P.P.S Thanks Jan - he's one of the best things that happened to me.

Yet another great pic of Zoomie.

I thought long and hard about getting an Iggie but with a 4 year old like a bull in a china shop i thought a whippet would be better.

I think Iggie breeders are the most responsible and really do not let pups go unless they are sure that there is no risks whatsoever.

I remember meeting the BEAUTIFUL Norman at Radway  (well I'd forgotten his name), but I didn't know who he belonged to. Anyway I went home and told him about Norman and he was fascinated, so we went on the internet to look at some pics and I think he's fallen in love with the breed before even meeting them (there's obviously something about men and IGs).

Thank you both so much for saying we can come and meet them- he'll be soooo pleased, but just know he'll want one :- ". We will definately be along to see all your beauties (we are lucky to live so near)

Here's the lovely Norman with the lovely Liz (alfie) at Lure coursing this summer.

Liz's IG's are lovely

Just like to say what lovely pics are on K9, its great to see them all, as a novice ig owner i am very grateful to see the threads and take advice from them. I am both glad and proud to be owned by an ig! But i do agree that not everyone is able to have one as they are a complex breed and even though i had done sooooooo much research and sought much advice it was much more difficult than i had imagined, however i am now very happy and settled with my blue and we look forwards to getting out for fun next year. Be warned though coz i will be wishing to ask many questions and seek your advice you iggy crew!

Well here's a pic of my Iggy with my son who is now nearly 4 1/2. It's a tricky one the subject of kids coz my Harry is fantastic with my dogs, especially Gucci who he adores, and yet he tends to play up when strangers come to my house so maybe we would not have passed a home check and yet the rest of the time he is great... Ages ago i took him to see House of Hanjy's many gorgeous Iggies, but he behaved terribly and one pinged from the floor onto his knee so in shock (and naughtiness  ) he pushed it to the floor, much to our horror!! Luckilly the Iggy was fine, but again if that was a home check the home checker would run screaming from my house in fear of me owing an Iggy i'm sure!!!!! :clown:

I honestly feel it a tragic shame that so many have such breakable legs preventing them becoming 'family pets' as they truly are an amazing breed to have around children (well sorry i only have experience of one Iggy so i'm obviously no expert!) they have the most suitable temperament for children and Gucci is the most fun loving, patient, ameniable, affectionate, caring, and loyal dog with Harry, his friends often come round for tea and i have no worries what so ever, they all think she is amazing and i have no worries about her damaging herself whilst playing either...

People have no worries going and getting a Westie or GSD or Collie for their family pet all of which CAN be unpredictable and untrustworthy around kids, yet are prevented from getting a super Iggy, purely because they could injure themselves. It's a real shame for the breed who naturally ADORE kiddies. That's my opinion anyway for what it's worth!!! :b

Hi,

Just caught up with this thread. They are soooo beautiful.

Kirsty

What fantastic pictures of all your Iggies on this thread, Ive so enjoyed them.

Funnilly enough my OH has really put his foot down now we have two whippets, but when I said I would love my next dog to be blue or blue and white - to which he replied 'our next dog will be an Italian Greyhound' - Im gobsmacked (w00t) , so Jan I may well visit you too someday you never know. That is the only other dog I would LOVE one day.

gina that's a lovely picture! :)

so your IG plays with the kids and no broken legs!

are you in the uk and if so where did you get your IG from - as it sounds they are a good line without brittle legs!

this made me laugh!

when we were looking for our first dog, we knew that we loved the looks of a whippet and they sounded like what we wanted in a dog but hadn't got up close to any. we spoke to whippet rescue and Linda Jones kindly invited us round to meet her lot.

we were going on a lovely warm sunny Sunday so stopped in a pub for lunch first, then set off on an hour's drive to her house.

the boys were only 8 and 3 at the time, so with full tummies and in a warm car, quickly fell asleep and had to be woken up when we got there. Linda let us in and we met her lovely pack of dogs, had lots of chat - the boys were interested at first then just flomped on the sofa.

we then heard that she had a young italian greyhound in the house - I'd never seen one so asked if we could have a peep at it. we were warned that it was a lively pup but I didn't mind at all, I couldn't wait to see it.

she walked in the room with the most beautiful dog I'd ever seen tucked under her arm!! she then put the dog down so it could come and say hello - it hit the floor and bounced straight back up again onto Lewis's face, kissing and wriggling as fast as it could!

so what did Lewis do? tired, warm and grumpy as he was, he screamed like a baby!!!!!!!

and when he had finally quietened down, guess what he said?

I don't mind if you get a whippet but I don't want one of those italian things! :b :- "

luckily he loves them now

OEH - hope you ain't the jealous type, cos you will get quickly pushed out of the no.1 spot if your old man gets an iggie, especially if it is a little floozy bitch, like mine are!
