I dont have a dog right now but me and my partner are starting to look into it since I now work from home permanently! (I've been self employed for the last 3 years and have always had time for a dog, I feel like I shouldn't really have to be explaining myself on a site that's supposed to offer advise rather than attack people, but if anyone wants a break down of my finances or day to day itinerary before responding with anything kind or informative, let me know). I do take the occasional photograph while I'm out and about and pet sit for family and friends though:) . I found this site by complete chance and missed being part of an online community that wasnt social media, so here I am!

Welcome to the forum - do you have a specific breed/type of dog in mind?
 
So you only want a dog as your home just now!! Dogs are for life as you will no, sorry to go straight to the point, so many people get dogs and they are not into it for the long game, right after saying all that you may be a good sort to own and walk and vet the dog, so best of luck in your search, just to say I gave my life to owning a dog ! They can give you so much , exercise, enjoyment, laughs, and get you thinking straight when times are bad so that’s why you give them all they need.

No, I have a business. I permanently work from home. And we've been planning on getting dogS for the last 3 years, but we were waiting until it was the perfect time and lived in the perfect place. But thanks for the advice. I only ever worked part time even when I worked outside of my home. Do you not work?

And I know what dogs need thanks I have plenty of actual professional experience of working with dogs, but thanks for being so tactful and informative.

Just as an FYI I have other pets and haven't taken a holiday in 3 years, and haven't visit my family on the other side of the UK in 1.5 years BECAUSE I'm so committed to my pets and don't trust anyone else to mind them. So yeah, cheers for being so welcoming. I'll delete my profile, apparently only the unemployed can own dogs, because that makes sense

Nope, I'm just a fan of large dogs! Preferably active and something that can keep up on a run! We'll likely be heading to a rescue so breed isn't important.
 
Don't worry about it, I've worked fulltime all my life and managed to have dogs. Yep I've made sacrifices for the dogs but it's all worked out good along the way. You will get people who say you can't leave dogs for more than four hours,which is a load of rubbish.

I don't think there is any such thing as "perfect time" to get a dog anymore than a "perfect time" to have a human child. you just decide things are close enough to ideal so that you can meet the needs of the dog under your care and go from there. So if you are thinking you have the time to do the required training to help your dog settle in and work with you, take the walks etc. then it's as good as time as any to get a dog.

Don't worry about having to explain your finances, some one here asked that of me, they would be ignored. It is none of their business.

you might have noticed people asking for details about a daily routine in some threads, there is a place for this...to a point. That being when trying to help troubleshoot a dog behavior issue. knowing something of the daily routine is helpful sometimes. But this is a public forum. it should be just understood that the info given would never be a detailed or personal as an in person consult would allow.

I am very new around here too. Hope you stick around.
 
@lurcherman, please don't jump to unfounded conclusions and then criticise, particularly when you haven't read their post carefully - even before editing her post, Laura had said that she was working from home now, not that this was a temporary measure, nor that at some point she would go straight back into working from home. You can see from Laura's post how it feels for someone to be 'welcomed' in this way.

@Laura Davies, I do hope you'll stick around. Lurcherman means well... I'm a big dog fan too:)
 
I didn’t see the permanently from home , off course I didn’t mean to offend, and I didn’t think my post was a criticism, I did say best of luck in her search!!! Weird , anyway didn’t mean to offend .

I think breed is extremely important when choosing a dog, even if you are getting a rescue dog. Admittedly, with a rescue dog previous experiences are going to have played their part, but a dog’s character and traits are strongly influenced by breed, or the mix of breeds that are in it. Therefore, background knowledge on the breed(s) is key to finding a dog you are compatible with. If you do find a large breed that you are interested in, there are always breed specific rescues you can try.

Breed isn't important to me. Because I'm not new to problem behaviour, im qualified in many aspects of working with animals as well as having experience of large dogs who have been mistreated. I've worked with rescue dogs and well aware of breed specific rescues.
