We would like to get our first whippet in the not too distant future. We would like a black whippet but prefer the slightly larger, more solid looking whippets rather than the very fine ones. Is this down to breeding or just pot luck?

I have to agree Beejay the 'show whippets' which are black I don't think are finer or lacking in bone. A lovely black which springs to mind is Little Friend of Martinsell he is a lovely boy. Of course not al whippets are either show or racing or working. Whippets often show as well as course/lure-course and sometimes work as well. Racing types are a bit different.BeeJay said:I've a black show bred who certainly isn't lacking in bone although it's a few years since he graced the ring. I can't remember seeing any blacks in the ring who were shown regularly lacking in bone either.
Also I don't understand why there is this myth about Sooty Sam dogs being good racing dogs. Whilst they do run down the track (just like my show breds do) but they aren't the fastest dogs to do this. So I'm sorry but they aren't desirable for racing at all even though the propaganda says that they are. I'd hate for someone to buy this type of whippet thinking that they are going to have an open class racing dog.
