We would like to get our first whippet in the not too distant future. We would like a black whippet but prefer the slightly larger, more solid looking whippets rather than the very fine ones. Is this down to breeding or just pot luck?

Hi and welcome to K9.

I'm a novice myself but there seem to be 3 kinds of whippets - showing, racing and coursing, and all have different 'lines' behind them, they all make good pets ofcourse :huggles:

Can you get out to shows, racing etc locally and see what type you like the look of?

We have 'show' type whippets, - you don't see many black dogs at shows and 90% of those that you do, are the very fine type.

All the best in your search for a whippy :luck:

Hallo :) Welcome to K9.

I have a black whippet bitch who is now 18 weeks old. She is descended from the Sooty Sam line which, I understand, is a desirable line for working and racing whippets. Her mother is tall and fairly solid and is an excellent rabbiter. I keep an eye on the website Epupz and there are some blacks on there at the moment - may be worth a look. Good luck and let us know when you get one ...... with lots of piccies!!!! :D

As jinnyfizz has said certain lines like sooty sam are desirable in working circles (not racing lines though as they tend to be too slow and big) ......Look at different lines/types to see what appeals .......Rae is right there are 3 types of Whippets now .......Show (where there are few blacks :( ) ......Working ......and the smaller racers .......but blacks are deffo the best :D ...... :luck: in your search :)

I've a black show bred who certainly isn't lacking in bone although it's a few years since he graced the ring. I can't remember seeing any blacks in the ring who were shown regularly lacking in bone either.

Also I don't understand why there is this myth about Sooty Sam dogs being good racing dogs. Whilst they do run down the track (just like my show breds do) but they aren't the fastest dogs to do this. So I'm sorry but they aren't desirable for racing at all even though the propaganda says that they are. I'd hate for someone to buy this type of whippet thinking that they are going to have an open class racing dog.

Have you tryed Paul Cork ,(Lynperry Whippets ) ,i know he breeds Blues , and Black coursing whippets , they are a very stocky and strong whippet ,heres his number 01603891638, Hope this will help ,Joe

I have to agree Beejay the 'show whippets' which are black I don't think are finer or lacking in bone. A lovely black which springs to mind is Little Friend of Martinsell he is a lovely boy. Of course not al whippets are either show or racing or working. Whippets often show as well as course/lure-course and sometimes work as well. Racing types are a bit different.

Of course black gives the impression of being finer (as well all know black is slimming) in the same way white dogs can look heavy or chunky - but it takes a good judge and eye to see beyone the colour

Paul Cork breeds lovely whippets - we have one of his and he is an absolute delight - really confident and friendly.
