Mine get their first innoculations at 14 and 16 weeks( Maternal antibodies may be still active up to 16 weeks) and then No Boosters. My vet years ago told me that it was not necessary, especially for dogs that are mixing with others (shows etc) as they build up a natural immunity. Also because I have heard of too many whippets that have suffered from auto-immune disease after boosters. I feed a natural diet (BARF) as far as possible, and it seems to work. The only dog I ever lost with parvo was innoculated against it. The boarding kennels thing is admittedly a problem, but mine either go to friends or stay at home and get looked after there. (I am lucky in having excellent doggy neighbours)

All the dogs we've had in my family have always been fully vaccinate, booster every year and kennel cough. To be honest i didn't realise so many people didn't vaccinate.

However, around a year a go i read a scientific paper on this discussion. The general concensus was that yearly boosters are not necessary and a dogs immunity lasts far longer than this. They were suggesting more infrequent boosters are all that's necessary.

My vet has recently changed their recommendation, in light of this more recent research. Every two years they recommend full boosters, the years inbetween they recommend just vaccination for certain diseases (i can't remember which). This routine is excepted by the kennels, and i thought it was the general practise everywhere now. You do have to go for yearly injections, but its about half the price the year they only get done for certain things.

IMO i can't believe responsible owners don't vaccinate puppies, even if they don't do boosters.

I spoke to my vets today and they was recomending 8weeks for the first jab and 12 for the second. But reading what I have I think Ill probably go a little later for the first initial jab.

Is £33.95 a good price for the 2 shots?

That's cheaper than we paid 2 1/2 years ago - was over £40.

Well, I am in the other camp.  I have seen a fully vaccinated puppy die from Parvovirus because I believe he had never built up 'field immunity'.  He came from a remote kennels in the wilds of Scotland (a top breeder/exhibitor not a puppy farmer I hasten to add) where the dogs never went anywhere other than their own land.  He came to our home in an urban environment and mixed freely with my own dogs and a litter I had bred myself of the same age.  They all went through the same innoculation programme.  He died at 5 months of age from Parvo.  NONE of my other dogs, adults or puppies were affected in the slightest and I actually had a PM carried out.
Since then I thought long and hard about vaccinations as I also know of another dog who died from Leptospirosis, after always having his innoculations as regular as clockwork.

For the past 12 years I have been using homeopathic nosodes, plus feeding a BARF diet.  I can honestly say my dogs are a lot healthier and robust.  I am happy to believe that is is effective.  One instance is one of my dogs travelled to a show with my friend's dog.  Her dog and all her sister's dogs were laid low with a bad bout of kennel cough within a couple of days of attending the show.  My dog was not afflicted although he did have one day of reverse sneezing and I gave him another dose and he stopped that.

I to use nosodes & have found exactly the same response

with kennel cough!

Is that nosodes as a booster or from the start? Did you have main vet jabs to begin with EJW?

No I didn't have the main vet jabs at all. They all had nosodes as their initial puppy protection & now have yearly nosode boosters.

Where would we purchase these nosodes from? We live in Birmingham so if anyone knows of anywhere near or ideas where I could go for these vaccines.

Thanks everyone for all your advice it's been very an enlightening read

I think I've read around 100 pages on the subject now lol
