Hi,

Well due to my parents moving abroad im moving in with a friend.

who has a Cat! :(

The cat is timid.

My dogs (2 lurchers) do get excitied when they see act out on teh street but have always been ok with the farm cats (think they know there r family)

How shall i introduce the dogs and cat?

I thought maybe take the quietest dog to the house and let some dog smell get about first? so "piper" (the cat) can smell her. then gradually inroduce them over time? and show each other that we are all friends?????

we were also think about putting the dog in the cage, and locking the cat flap after a while just so they r in the same room????

Has anyone else done this before?

Im just worried that the cat may run off?!!! :(

any ideas helpful.

Hope you get on with the cat ok. I have 3 cats and three whippets.

When I bring a pup home I always let them smell each other under supervision in the same room but dont force the cats to stay.

A crate sounds a good idea for introductions too. Its funny because Archie sleeps in his crate downstairs and one of my cats sleeps curled up on the top now.. :huggles:

Im sure with a bit of patience you will be able to introduce them successfully - good luck and let us know how your get on... :luck: :luck:

Hi - not sure if this will be any use to you but here goes ...

I have 5 cats, all of whom can be very timid, and I have introduced both dogs and puppies to them over the years.

However ... I have always prioritised the cats feelings as they were here first and 'dog' is their natural enemy!! At first Piper will probably be horrified but this should pass and his natural curiosity will get the better of him.

I think it is a good idea to keep your dogs caged whilst indoors for at least a week or so in order to let Piper get used to the smell and sound of them and to avoid potential problems. Let them out for short intervals whilst you and your friend are both in the room to see fair play, give Piper lots of love and attention and make sure that any interest shown in Piper by the dogs prompts an immediate reaction from you and a severe warning ..... 'NO'

That way you are elevating Piper to a higher position in the pack than your dogs and they should respect that because you, as pack leader, have put the rules in place.

Hopefully Piper will adjust to the new room mates but always let him have his space ...... Cats need that :D

Good luck and I hope it works out :luck: :luck:  Jane

 thanks

let piper and amber see each other yesterday.

they were more inquizative than anything.

We've got 3 dogs & 6 cats & most of the time it works out. We've done it both ways & introduced a new dog or a new cat. I always leave a lead trailing on the dogs just in case they make a run for the new cat. The only dog we have a problem with is Rafferty but then he's a Bedlington....nuff said :- "

I foster kittens a lot & always have them (or Rafferty) in a crate until they all get used to one another.

I would never leave a dog you are unsure of alone with a cat, sometimes I'll even take Rafferty up to the loo with me rather than take a chance he'll eat the kitten whilst I'm gone (w00t)

I really hope your dogs get on with Piper, it's lovely when they are friends.

Heres our Hebe with a couple of kittens I had last year
