My little one hasn’t had the best start in life. He is 7 months old and in this time he has been allergic to flea meds, had kennel cough (despite being vaccinated) had giardia, acid reflux and the latest incident was a partial blockage due to eating a bit of rubber and had to have part of his intestines removed. As a result I am constantly worried about him to the point I am making myself ill. This is my first dog. Is this normal? He is my world but I am getting to the stage where I regret getting him and for that I feel awful. Any advice anyone can offer? I constantly worry about what may or may not happen!

Yes and no?

I used to lie awake watching to make sure my boy was still breathing. And, after all the traumas it is natural to think 'what's next'.

But. If it's making you ill, maybe you are worrying a little too much.

Do you have support from family? Do you worry about other things, is it worth having a word with your gp?

I have 1 brother who is not a doggie person and doesn’t get it. I live in my own and my boyfriend lives 40 miles away so I only see him at weekends. None of my local friends are doggie people either.

There are lots of regional dog walking groups on FaceBook (and presumably other social media). Some arrange group walks, others allow you to post asking if anyone with a compatible dog would like to meet up for walks in a particular place, and so on. Maybe you could meet other dog people there? Most of us like nothing more than to chat about our dogs and their foibles and problems, knowing that the other person will understand.

Maybe something like this could help you? Obviously you have to take the usual precautions when meeting someone you don't know - but I met one of my best mates this way.

I think you are having a difficult start with your puppy and because you care so much it is naturally making you very anxious . I had many years ago a child with many health problems, some where life threatening. I felt as sense of dread of what could go wrong. Now i am no doctor nore vet but i suspect these problems will get sorted betwen you and the vet and your puppy will go from strenght to strenght, this will give you confidence and help you feel less anxious. It is unfortunate that you are having everything throne at you at once. Many have an easier time with new puppies and therefore, problems coming here and there which can make the problems seem less overwhelming .When my baby was incredibly ill, i was advised to just take one day at a time and try not to look back at all that had passed and not look forward to potential problems ahead. Just today. Difficult but helped me through. Many people will have felt like you , certainly normal in my world as i am one of lifes worriers. But i suspect your confidence in yourself and your capabilities as a dog owner will grow with time. You clearly care a lot and this will make you be the very best person for your puppy, he is very lucky to have you. Pascalina

Ah thank you. Sadly Freddie has just had his 2nd stomach op in 4 months. Poor little lad has been through a lot. I thought he was getting better with his tummy until this happened. Waiting on biopsy results. Would like to know what is causing all his problems. Cx

It is a very stressful time for you. I very much hope you have answers soon and a plan so that you and Freddie can start enjoying yourselves together. Wishing you both the very best. Pascalina
