I got Captain from a rescue and was told he was a whippet possibly crossed with a greyhound. There was no certainity as he had been collected as a stray after travellers had left him and several other dogs behind. However he is very small, only 20 inches high and therefore greyhound cross seemed unlikely(although I'm no expert). Jim Greenwod, a lurcher trainer, did some work with him and thought he was a staffy cross, although he said it would have to have been in previous generations as he was too whippety to be a direct cross. Having accidentally come across the thread about bully whippets it's set me wondering, Captain is the same height and size as my other dog ( a genuine whippet) and my dads whippet also BUT he is very muscly. Its difficult to pic up from the pics as he's such a pale colour but they do give some comparison between the two dogs. (They're very lazy and were enjoying the sun through the window- perfect photo opportunity). He has an undershot jaw, to the point that many people comment on his likeness to The Simpson's dog, Santa's Little Helper. Is he simply a cross or may he be a 'bully whippet'? There seem to be many people confidently stating they own a bully whippet but how do they know? If anyone can shed any light on this I'd really appreciate it. ( for curiosities sake only - I love my dogs regardless of their origins). Many thanks, Cheryl.

 Picture didn't attach, I've tried again, hopefully it'll appear this time.

hi, welcome to K9 :D

its really difficult to tell from the lying pic so I can't offer an opinion (not that I am an expert  ) but it is a good excuse to get you to post more pics of your dogs

He looks like a lurcher, a greyhound crossed with something else.

Heres are two, they look similar to yours

More photos of yours please

Well I have no idea really but his face certainly looks similar to the faces of the bully whippet pics I've seen... with the markedly undershot jaw.

They're lovely whippy's and we need more pics  they look so content lying in the sunspot.

Thanks for your reply Alison, unfortunately my two don't pose as beautifully as your dogs, standing shots are a rarity. I seem to have countless lying down/running shots but very little in between. Anyway, as you said, any excuse to post doggy pics should be taken so I've found a few more that show Captain in little more detail. Hopefully that should give everyone a little more to go on.

and another! (if anyone can tell me how to reduce the file sizes further so I can fit multiple pictures on I'd appreciate it)

Hi Mr. Whippy..one of our K9 members Cathrine owns a bully whippet called MAC, she now lives in Norway. If you look up her name in the members list you could pm her, or look up her posts with the pictures of Mac.

Its hard to say looking at your lovely photos....but Im sure Cathrine would be happy to show off Mac, hes gorgeous.

Welcome to K9 ....we love photos of whippets no matter what... :huggles:

Many thanks, I can certainly see similarities between Mac and my Captain Fantastic. I've managed to get some extra photos tonight of him from the front so his leg muscle definition is clearer and another on the beach which is a bit blurred but gives an overall impression of his physique in action. ( I'm feeling a bit guilty now at posting so many photos of just Captain as his mate Presley has just gambolled over, climbed on the sofa and given me the biggest cuddle, he's now got his head tucked under my arm so typing ain't easy)

The name 'bully whippet' is a bit misleading. They don't have any bull blood, they are pure whippets with a genetic mutation which makes them heavier and more muscular than normal whippets.

I have to say this dog definitely looks like a 'bully' to me - there's something about the shape of the head and the undershot jaw that's quite distinctive. He's very gorgeous though - 'bullies' have a reputation for having very happy natures, too.

He looks a lovely dog whatever his breeding. But wouldn't that be an overshot jaw not undershot? Isn't it overshot where the top jaw is longer than the lower?

i would say he's slightly bully looking at his head, like its been said it looks like the classic signs eg undershot jaw

but he's lovely looking  and is not as bad as some "bully" whippets i have seen
