I took home an un-spayed 8 month old pug cross border terrier cross rescue about six weeks ago.

After the initial separation anxiety she settled in fine and was a delight. When we picked her up we noticed her bits were a little swollen since then her nipples have become very swollen and she has been paying particular attention to cleaning her personal area! This has not changed apart from her nipples becoming more prominent in the six weeks we have had her however she has not bled. This would be her first season. She also has had no unwanted attention from other male dogs which we socialise her with, First question is...is she in season? Is she coming into season? How can I tell, I have been informed that some bitches don't bleed on their first season, she has been humping things but no males seemed to have notice?

The other odd thing that has happened is that she has become incredibly naughty, will not listen, and worst of all has taken to barking constantly. Having slept through the night unbothered for five weeks in the last three days she has barked 6 out of the 8 hours we have been (or tried to be) asleep. Could this behaviour change be hormonal? ...hoping and praying its only temporary!

HOW LONG WILL THIS LAST :'(

(And before anyone asks yes she was due to be spayed but had kennel cough when we picked her up so is going in ...if she is not in season... next Wednesday!)

ooh crikey, it sounds like she is, and their first one can be a bit weird with only some of the symptoms and go on for a while etc.... It does affect their temperament a bit too, grumpiness and lethargy etc..... you vet will be able to tell you, but that will be annoying if she is booked in. I'd give them a ring and ask.

Barking all night suddenly is a bit odd, do you think it is something spooking her that she is barking at or just for attention? Or has something changed in your routine around bedtime or during the day?

she could just be testing her boundaries, and your limits! as she has been rehomed so young she will not fully understand what is expected of her, she may have barked a lot before and had her previous owner respond to her. I'd try and get her really tired in the evening, with time for her to calm down before bed, then try leaving the radio on quietly in her room, incase its the noise of the wind or something setting her off. Do you respond to her barking or have you been ignoring it? where does she sleep, is she in a crate?

p.s. she's very cute. Big well done for rescuing her!

Aww thank you yes she is very cute, we are very lucky!!

We never respond to her barking, the only time when we might respond not on purpose is when we have to go into the room where she sleeps to get something; I've been told with a barker you should wait until they are quiet before you go in but she does break even for air! She sleeps in a crate- it's just so weird as for the last few weeks she has been settled happy in her crate, she barked on her first night but only for 15 mins or so! I thought it might be something spooking her but not for 6/7 hours! She seems anxious and difficult to settle which is why I thought it might be hormonal!
