Is peanut butter ok for puppies

I have been reading a book that says it is a good thing when leaving them alone for short trips out of the house, to leave them with a stuffed Kong toy.

I wondered if anyone has done this for such a young puppy and if they have what did they stuff it with. I thought smooth peanut butter mixed with some of her food.

Any idea's? :ermm:

erm... I'm presuming that if you got her at 4weeks old, then you would have been feeding her on semi solid food to wean her onto solid food? Does she have teeth yet? I would think that at only 6 weeks old she is too tiny to be left to entertain herself at all, especially not with food, in case she chokes. Maybe in the future peanutbutter would be fine, its not harmful, and it is good and sticky.

Did you contact the original breeder after you found out how young she was? I'm shocked that someone could sell a puppy so young, especially a small breed. They need their mums still, till they are much older, well done for managing to keep her going, it must have been a stressful couple of weeks.

I agree that its too young to give her peanut butter, she should still be weaning at home with her Mum at 6 weeks (insert naughty breeder again)

What have you been feeding her up until now?

Peanut butter makes a good binder for Kongs, ie to stick other stuff like biscuits or kibble together, but it is too rich to stuff a whole one with. With your pup I definitely wouldn't be feeding anything as rich until she was at least 12 weeks and settled on a solid diet. As with all foods, everything in moderation and a little bit now and then will do no harm.

Your breeder needs a visit from the RSPCA or preferably, from me.

I was shocked once I found out how old she was and that she had indeed got kennel cough. She had no teeth at all but they are now beginning to come through.

I have molly coddled her since we have had her. ie hotwater bottle wrapped in a blanket in her bed at night and a extra heater incase the tempature drops in the night.

I feed her Naturediet puppy food, I have been giving her Lactol milk to suppliment her mothers milk. She eats and drinks fine.

She still has kennel cough but the vet wants to see if her own resources can overcome it. If she still has it in a couple of weeks she will give her a course of anti biotics.

The breeder also told me she had been wormed, having my doubts the vet gave me some worming syrup. Three days later I was throwing up at the amount of worms came out of her. It was awful.

I can't believe people can seem so honest but be so greedy for money that they put the need of the puppies second.

Bless her she is so lovely. She already responds to her name, is almost paper trained and knows what I mean when I say "dinner" she runs around in a circle and jumping on the spot. She settles down in her crate at night now without a sound and I go to her in the morning before she starts crying about 7.30am.

She has gained 8oz in two weeks.

I am happy with her progress but yes it has been a stressful couple of weeks, lots of tears but I wouldn't part with her for the world.

aaaw bless you, thats a pretty innocent view of things, i kind of think anyone that sells puppies on a website has to be a complete a*#*#ole, farmer or not, and thats the mildest thing i could think of to say.

I agree with Jasp, he needs a telling off. I would definitley give the Rspca a call/email, i shouldn't imagine it will come back to you, if that is what your husband is worried about, and it might stop him doing it again. Imagine what your pups mum is going through!

Or...... at least email the website, and tell them, encourage them to stop the sale of puppies in this way. Well done for posting his details on here.

Good luck with her, you sound like you have been doing your very best to help her get a good start, after the terrible one she got, and it must be awful her being poorly. There are some lovely and knowledgeable people on here that will be able to give you lots of support.

I agree with hanneroon and I definitely think the RSPCA would have something to say to this guy. Problem is though that their powers are extrememly limited so I am not sure how far they could take it. You would probably need to provide them with a statement as well as documentation from your vet. At the very least you should inform pets4homes so that they can remove his adverts. They state quite clearly in their t&c's that pets should not be sold until they are 8 weeks at the very minimum.

The pup is lucky you are willing to go to the expense of caring for the problems that this moron has created and we can only hope that her siblings have been so lucky.

i don't think they (the rspca) would need all that stuff just to go and check the guy out and talk to him. They do love to prosecute people, but actually they're meant to prevent cruelty by informing and warning people, and rechecking animals at risk,and that kind of thing.

I have done the right thing, I think. I have reported the breeder to the website. There is one puppy left and I do hope it goes to a good home. :>

yay! Well done doggielover! You did the right thing. I looked on that website. I had no idea so many puppies are for sale like that, 330 litters of bichons! It was a real eyeopener, lets hope they all get nice homes like yours, good luck, once again.

RSPCA won't be bothered, keep your eye out for him selling other litters too, if he is a puppy farmer he will have many litters for sale, he may even be a third party seller. There are people who buy litters off puppy farmers to sell on, no mother to view and always a heep of bull*hit excuses as to where and why mom is not to be seen.

Kennel cough is another sign of a puppy farmer, many litters or having come from an environment where hygene is poor can make a breeding ground for kennel cough.

He should be reported and sites such as pets for homes should do more to vet their advertisers.

I do hope your pup continues to come on in leaps and bounds.
