Hi There,

I have just registered on K9 today and think its great!

I posted a notice in the showing section to find out if i can show my non-registered whippet, Ten. We had a go at a charity show and he loved it. Anyway looks like the answers no, however a few people have suggested racing...

To be honest i don't have a clue about it and what racing involves - i did once go to a geyhound race, but am told whippet racing is not the same - we're looking for something a bit less scary than greyhound racing - more of a fun sport :))

Ten is very sociable, 15 months old and neutered. apparently his dad was a successful racing dog. Ten loves chasing birds on the beach, but i suspect he would much prefer other dogs!

I've been looking for clubs for a long time, but not found anything in our area, i have just seen a club in Newton Aycliffe (just around the corner!), listed on this site though. Does anyone know if they have a club for unregistered whippets. ( i will ring them tomorrow!)

How do you train your dog to race? will he learn this at a club? is 15 months too old or young to start? Does anyone know of any suitable clubs in the Teesside/Durham area? Will racing cause him to chase the cat?

Any advice will be most appreciated - Moo & Ten.

:D hi moo

newton aycliffe starts the new season next saturday 15/1/05 @ 1pm weather permitting, you are welcome to come along with your dog @ 15mt it will be strange @ first for him getting used to the noise of the traps and the other dogs barking but a few weeks and he will probalby be as daft as the rest

Hi Moo just lookin at the picture of TEN I notice he still has his dew claws if you get to race him I suggest you strap them up most racers use vet wrap its a light weight elasticated bandage Alison Armstrong sells it and she,ll show you how to use it

:D Thankyou all for the advice & contact details!

Unfortunately i'm working for the next few saturdays :( but Tens Dad may be able to pop him over for a look about...

...Oh but i'm sure that would be the equivalent of missing his first day of school!!!! Think i'll try and book the day off.

Just another Qu: what age do dogs usually start racing at?

Mucho Thanks, Moo & Ten

:D most people start training their whippets to race when they r still pups from about 6 months old onwards it all depends on the size of the dog and how u want to train them. personally i like to wait till they r at least 8 months but thats just me. like john g says ten will probably find it a bit strange at first but he will soon get used to it. :D

Doh!!! I cant get saturday off work!

When is this meet next on so i can make sure i'm free, or is it a weekly thing?

Many Thanks, Moo :(

Racing is a weekly thing :D , so you can go along any Saturday.

All non ped club's will welcome ped whippet's and give you advice and a run up for the dog. Everyone is welcome to watch these wee dog's racing but keep your dog's on a lead
