When we got our latest rescue girl, Callie, a week ago today, I thought she was just starting her season - her vulva was swollen and her teats slightly enlarged, but it seems she must have been on the tail end of it, as her vulva and teats are now smaller.

She was picked up as a stray and fostered for a week with other dogs (no idea of their sex but there were lurchers and a Jack Russell. The JRT was a boy)

We are wondering if she might have mated while she was one the run or in foster care -maybe that was why she escaped or was dumped (the vet thinks the latter as her paws were scratched and pads torn).

We have to take her back to the vet in about 3 weeks to see if she might be in pup - and have her spayed, as she is too young to have a litter. We couldn't cope with pups anyway, so i hope she isn't pregnant as I hate the idea of abortion - even on a dog! :(

Is there a way to tell if she is pregnant?? Here lower abdomen is definitely rounded slightly, but then she has been eating like a horse since she arrived. What other symptoms might she have early on?

Hope for some advice please!! After all, if I hadn't come on here about our Lily a couple of weeks ago, she might be either dead or very ill by now, as we took her to the vet to get her anal glands done, following suggestions from many of you, and the pyometra was discovered. Now she is back to normal and twice as bossy!!!

You could have Callie scanned in 3 weeks time, most scans will show if a bitch has pups 4 weeks from the date of mating so if she is at the end of her season that would be about the right time.

If she isnt pregnant our vets recommend you have a bitch spayed 3 months after their season.

I so hope she isnt pregnant - have you spoken to the foster home to see if they kept her away from entire male dogs - a neutered dog will still mate a bitch and could cause a phantom pregnancy but then it could have happened before.

lots of luck

We don't know the foster home direct - it would mean getting in touch with whippet rescue who would have to contact the dog warden, who would then find out from the foster home!! I think we'll wait for the scan - but we did wonder if there was an early sign (or signs ) on a pregnant bitch, lke in a pregnant human!! :teehee:

Some times their nipples are more prominant. hey , im NO expert :- "

Most vets wont spay ,( as already said . ) unless 3 months After a season , for good reason .

I d hate the thought of doing it now if she is having puppies . :(

Oh Janet..hope she isnt pregnant. Its years since I had a bitch...and Ive got all boys now.

lets hope its just maybe a false one...
