Does anyone else have itchy footed Whippets?

After walks Bluebell goes mad with what appears to be itchy feet, she's squeaking and getting very frustrated licking her paws now, I don't think we've been near nettles.

Any ideas for anything to ease her discomfort?

She is lovely  but I bet she has found some nettles!! Stand her in cold water for as long as she will and then just let them dry naturally DON'T TOUCH OR RUB her feet or you will set them off itching again! You could also spray aloe vera on them which will take the sting away quickly. I wouldn't bother with Piriton or anything like that because the itching will subside fairly quickly. Don't let her lick or itch them either as it will just prolong the itching.

Yep, I second the cold water. It seems to help a lot even if you do have to 'encourage' them to stay in the water (I just pop the iggies in the kitchen sink if they've been running in nettles :p )

Calendula complex is great too as it is an anti-inflammatory . Just put a few drops in cold water and bathe the feet and dry naturally . You can also get it in creme form but I found that they want to lick it off before it soaks in fully. It's also great for prickly heat in humans .

Poor old Poppy has very itchy feet at the moment too. We dont walk through nettles, I think it may be an allergy but I have no idea what it can be. I havn't changed her food or my washing powder or anything.

She has almost made the back ones bleed and the skin on the back of her feet looks a bit like exzema (sp?).

The vet gave me some shampoo, but I am not very hopeful that it will work.

I have been adding vitimin E to her tea and linseed oil, but of course anything I put on iher feet like aloe vera for instance, just draws her attention them and then she licks them even more.

The vet wants to do a skin scrape next but I may ask about allergy testing.

:(

Poor girl!!

I would say quite possibly nettles, especally at this time of year as the irritant is much stronger after they have flowered but also I have a terrorist who gets dreadful itchy, burning hot, toes after walking unless we ruthlessly remove protein from his diet.

He lives on 10% protein dog meal, the wee soul, but as long as he has no treats his feet, and ears, stay healthy.

My Jay-J, a whippet, used to get it when he was young but I always thought it was nettles and then he grew out of it!

Good luck!!

And I love the name 'Bluebell'

Thank you all for advice - I will try the cold water next time I take her out.

K9 is great! I love the fact that someone always has the answer to my queries on these strange little beasts!!

She's growing alarmingly quickly - I think she's trying to catch up with Alfie (Colliex)!!

...and her ears are definately trying to be like his!

Cor Bluebells gorgeous  ....I'd say nettles as well though I rub Aloe Vera gel into my lots feet when they've been stung as it cools and soothes very quickly :)
