Here she is! My little girl. She lives in USA, NC. So far from me... But I'm happy to know she is doing well. :)

Pity only she is still too small for AKC standard.

Smaller than the bottom end of the AKC standard? Perhaps you should have sent her to Australia then! ;)

Thank you all for your comments!

Yes, smaller. :( She is about 44 cm now. But why to Australia? (w00t) What is the height standard for whippets there? Or judges in Australia appreciate small whippets? :p

I can't speak for the judges and some of them are awarding very tall dogs - but as a breeder (and I know there are still a few like me around) I appreciate 'em correct. But it's getting harder and harder to keep the size down.

Aussie standard

Dogs 18 1/2 - 20 inches (47 -51cm) and bitches 17 1/2 - 18 1/2 (44 - 47cm)

It appears now when many of us here refer to "small" whippets, the dogs we are actually calling small are, in reality, correct. It's the numbers of taller dogs that are making the correct ones look small. But of course we have discussed this ad infinitum on this board.

So you have the same height standard as we here (FCI).

I also prefer correct dogs and totally agree with you! But you're right - because of some oversized dogs normal (with standard height) look small... Then all my dogs are small. :- " And I will try to breed small (of course, it will not be the main goal). :- "

But there is another problem with my Pixie - she lives in the country where is another height standard. She is OK for FCI standard but still is too small for AKC. I don't know if judges there will be very strict to her height or not. Our judges usually don't pay attention at height. Only several of them measure dogs in the ring.

You're right again - it's another topic. I've read that thread here about the height, it was really interesting to know everyone's opinion about it.

is the thread on height still on here? if so, what forum is it on please? :D

I think mine are Small for show breeding Callie is 18 3/4 inches and 24 and Sienna is 19 inches 25/26lb and lean not 'well covered' I think the term is it doesn't matter to me as I don't show, but I once went to a companion show and callie won :D afterwards the judge came up to me and said it was nice to see a whippet as it should be not like a small greyhound :)

I've recently realised that it seems my whippets are one of the smallest (though they are all in the FCI standard) even in the Eastern Europe!

And I can imagine how my little girl Pixie will look with her 44-45 cm (I do hope she will grow at least 1 cm more!) in compare with bitches 51-52 cm! Though she has a true whippet character and very nice movements despite her small height and I hope it will be appreciated too! Just I don't know the way of judging in the USA.

Lesley, I don't understand, what does it mean - small for show breeding? If the dog has STANDARD height and doesn't have serious faults and looks like whippet but not like IG, so why you mustn't use this dog in the breeding and showing? Maybe judges will then get used to see whippets with normal height in the ring :- "

Sorry  No I don't mean mine are wrong for showing( I'm just not into it) what I mean is compared to a lot of show dogs of today mine are small by comparison even though their breeding is from show parents who do very well in shows. :D

I race and do lure coursing and they love it so being small is to their advantage I think

Pixie is gorgeous BTW    she looks a bit like my Callie just a little less white

She is beautiful  - and does look like your girls too Lesley.

Lesley, now I understand what did you mean! I just wondered if (and why) it is not allowed to breed and to show small whippets there...

If we had coursing here, my dogs could be successful in it, and I'm sure they must like it too, but... we have neither coursing, nor racing. :( Only field trials, but it's rather dangerous for dogs.

In any case your dogs look gorgeous  and Callie really looks similar to Pixie! They are in fact a little bit relatives.

Are they so we are family now :huggles:  it's a shame you don't have lure coursing there it's great fun, I don't really know much about showing to be honest but I think if I was going to breed any of mine to a show bred whippet the sire would have to be a bit bigger I think, if I wanted them to go to show homes as thats what seems to be desirable here  (thats a general observation) :)
