This is Josef Sloughi. He is about 4 years old, neutered, vaccinated, and was living feral for at least three years in Ireland, and no doubt before that was very badly treated. He is now still in Ireland, but in a private greyhound sanctuary in a home environment. He is now ready for a permanent home.

Josef is an intelligent, sensitive, and well-behaved sloughi, and is housebroken, well socialized (for a sloughi!), loves the car, and gets along well with all other dogs here. Off leash in open fields, he has selective recall but always stays with the pack and does not go off on his own. This special boy will need an experienced sighthound owner, one who is willing to keep in mind his unfortunate past.

If you are interested in Josef, please feel free to pm me through this board.

Handsome Josef - Good luck in finding a home handsome boy. :luck:

Thanks for your good wishes. Here is another (pre-neuter!) photo of Josef:

Just for anyone considering Josef my friend who lives in france has a sloughi and she says he is the most wonderful dog she has a two year old daughter too and he is fantastic with her

Good luck to him :luck: :luck:

Are you all sure he is a purebred sloughi, then? He looks quite different from the ones I have seen. Looks a bit more like a saluki lurcher to me.

Does not really matter, I guess. Hope he finds a good home soon.

I think you are right; Saluki X Greyhound?

Best of Luck Josef :luck: :luck: :luck:

No good news for Josef yet. One man was interested in him - he owns the only registered sloughi in Ireland - but he keeps her very confined, which Josef would never adjust to...by that I mean she is either in the house, or outside in a 30x40ft concrete yard with 6 ft high fencing, or getting leash-walked on a short leash. Cannot imagine Josef ever adjusting to that.

Yes, Josef is a sloughi. The US sloughi people think so, the UK sloughi people think so, and if you look at several dozen sloughi photos, you will see there are variations with the head - especially the snout/nose area. Some have heavier heads than others.

Here is a very recent photo of him...

Before I realized he was a sloughi, I at first thought he was greyhound-saluki. During the 1st two weeks he was here, every day I would look at him and just wonder about him. If he was such a cross, that would mean he had the shape somewhat of a saluki, but the bone of a very large greyhound. And the colouring was not something I had ever seen in a greyhound, and rarely have seen in salukis. So I knew something was a bit off. He also acted like a withdrawn saluki...no wonder, considering his background....

One night I was on the computer doing something totally different, and out of the blue I realized he was a sloughi, a breed I knew little about. Going with my instinct, I spent hours looking at sloughi photos. It was at that point I contacted the US sloughi people and sent photos. I tried the UK sloughi people but they were quite standoffish, and found out why several weeks later....

There has been a problem in the sloughi community in the UK. A woman prominent within their organization has been breeding them by the dozens and keeping them in horrific conditions....so horrific that the RSPCA recently brought 27 counts of cruelty against her. She has been doing this for years. THe US slough people are pretty sure he was one of her dogs, as she was known to be breeding sloughis of this colouring a few years ago - we estimate he is 4 yrs old. The person I have had the most contact with is Dr. Dominique de Carprona, a sloughi owner, breeder and behavourist who has written extensively about the breed.

There is one woman in the UK sloughi group who has been receptive, and she has Josef on her website.

What I suggest to some of you is that maybe some of the "lurchers" you have seen were not lurchers at all, but sloughis. This should not be surprising, as the woman mentioned above was on a real breeding frenzy for several years. I think most of the dogs most recently removed from her were either homed or put down.

If you google sloughi +Caprona you will find some pretty good descriptions and photos of sloughi temperament, colouring and body types. Josef's colouring is what you would call "red sand with black overlay".

Sloughis are wonderful dogs. Independently minded, but highly intelligent and sensitive. I in fact saw photos yesteray of a "sad lurcher" in a Dublin pound. Sullen, growling, depressed, curled up in a tight ball, she wants no one to touch her. But sloughis are well known for not wanting to be touched by strangers. The vet there, never having heard of sloughis, wants to put her to sleep today.

I have sent her photo - which really only shows a very sloughi-ish head - to the US sloughi people, and they suspect she is a sloughi too, though we need to see body and colour to be sure.

Wish me luck, I am trying to find a way to save her.

Oh the poor girl, it is no wonder that she appears sad. Is there no way anyone can help?

I am trying to find the funding needed to care for her upkeep and medical. It might be coming. I will find out in a few minutes if they insist on putting her down today.

Here is Josef again, in a typical sleeping position - never mind that there are thick doggy duvets on the kitchen floor! No! He MUST be in a chair....

Just wondered what then happened to this person, is she still continuing to breed? :(

 He does look lot more like Sloughi in this picture, although I am not sure about his bushy tail. I only met few of them in France few years ago and they were totally different style, lot more slim and leggy, andtheir coat was very short and smooth, just like Whippet out to be. I was more interested in Azawakhs, actually i was absolutely fascinated by their incredibly exaggerated shape. And i was horrified when few years later I saw what the yanks did to them - they lost all the traits that made Azawakh an Azawakh  They lost their legginess, shape and were "well covered". It quit quite possible they did improve the Sloughi in similar way.

I do not know where this woman you speak about got her foundation stock, was it from US?

The woman's breeding stock was all British/North African, to my knowledge.

She was one of the founding members, one of the first people to be breeding sloughis. Then it got "a little out of control", though many club members looked the other way at her abuse and neglect - go to the Bath Cats and Dogs Home website and you will see some info and photos regarding the conditions they were found in. Cages stacked on top of each other with feces and urine dripping through, etc.

If I recall correctly, her court case came up in January 2006 after it was delayed twice. She was allowed to keep two of her own dogs as long as they got neutered and the others were taken from her. I think she was not allowed to own any other dogs from now on. You can go to the sighthoundsonline.org.uk site and read several posts about it. This has caused an incredible sensation among the sloughi community all over the globe and has cast all sorts of nasty shadows on the club. They are trying to put themselves back together, but it's not easy. I think this was all discussed on Dog Pages as well.

In that photo, Josef's tail looks bushy but I think the focus was off...he has very short hairs throughout his body, though his tail does have a slight fringe of maybe 1 inch long hairs.

His character/pesonality is very sloughi! Whenever I see him doing something odd - whcih is easy to spot among a gaggle of greyhounds - I often run to the computer to find out if it is sloughi behaviour - and it usually is. He is not as fast as the greyhounds but he is very agile and loves to LEAP and BOUND at the other dogs from about 8 feet away. He also is very flexible in the hip area and can lie on his belly and stretch his back legs out to the side and behind him. One sloughi person initally thought Josef might be an Azawakh, mostly due to his colouring, but that theory was quickly squashed. I have some photos of sloughi heads that look like Josef's, and I can post them here if anyone is interested.

sorry! something odd happened while I was trying to edit the above....what I wanted to edit in was this:

Some sloughis do have the exaggerated deep rib cage, though Josef's is just moderate. I have seen several champoin sloughis without the exaggerated look, so I think who gets pinned at a dog show depends on the judge's personal preferences to what he or she thinks a sloughi should look like.

Anyway, I am waiting to get a few more photos of this "sad lurcher" in the pound.

Someone on this board has offered some help, though it is not the financial kind, which is what we need before we can commit to her.

Anyway, thanks for your interest in Josef! Now doesn't anyone here have a nice small group of dogs whom Josef could fit into? He is a great boy!

What do you need? Maybe we could have a whip round (what do other people think)??
