The problem you have is, If you ask someone weather you should show under a certain judge and the person you ask has NOT done well under them they are going to say dont bother and you may miss a good judge for your dog. So, you could end up asking lots of people and getting lots of different answers.

Or if you are fairly well off you could just go under all of them and make a judgement yourself about their judging, writing this down least you forget!! I did this one year but cant say I really learned much, only how much money dog showing cost (w00t)

You could ask your dogs breeder about the judges although you do risk the first answer.

If its a breed specialist you could see what sort of dog they are showing themselves. Though judges sometime dont put up just the type they have so this can be a bit hit and miss too.

My advice would be to try and find someone who you respect and feel is reasonably impartial and does'nt run any judges down if they dont win themselves.

It is a very hard question to answer, I hope I have helped, but remember you can ask anything you like on here.

Finally Im sure SOME of our more outgoing posters will come up with some equally good advice, but just dont listen

PM someone for more personal advice. (on judges JAX) :D

Must agree with Karen 8) When you are starting out its very difficult to decide who to enter under and who not to

Its only with years of practice and money spent that I now know who to waste my money on and who not to ...WRONG !!!!!... I wish it was that simple , but judges who Ive gone under not really expecting to do well have come up trumps ,and those who i thought Id have a chance with have lead to me being disappionted . Obviously some judges I would hazard a guess on them `prefering ` certain colours / size /handlers  (w00t) not allowed to say such things are we  :- "

But this year ive been pleasantly surprised by one or two judges who I thought would do certain thing , that havnt. even if Ive not got the placing s I was expecting . As long as they judge the dogs `fairly ` and impartially (sp) ia all you can ask .

Some judges ,you really have agood idea what they will do :b but others you never know and Id just give them a go .

Anyhow , why should we , who have spent £££££ and driven miles give any advice to you new comers (w00t)

..............

cus we do and we can  wether we are right is another matter o:)

I nearly agree with Karen (nothing new there then :- " ) in that with experience when you dont win and can appreciate that your own dogs are not the type being placed it doesn't mean you will say don't bother what will make a difference is when the judge places dogs of different types in each class and has a line-up that has no symmetry. This may be due to lack of numbers but usually is seen as 'doing a favour'

Or if you are fairly well off you could just go under all of them and make a judgement yourself about their judging, writing this down least you forget!! I did this one year but cant say I really learned much, only how much money dog showing cost (w00t)
Definitley NOT recommended to look at the cost of showing: entry fees/travelling costs/ catalogue/ show leads/ food at shows/ chosing a car/van/truck/pantechnecon just to transport you and the dogs to shows. etc........

You could ask your dogs breeder about the judges although you do risk the first answer.
Almost agree BUT the breeder should know whether the type is suitable

If its a breed specialist you could see what sort of dog they are showing themselves.  Though  judges sometime dont put up just the type they have so this can be a bit hit and miss too.

I would add to that - then go under the judge if it is a local show and find out for yourself.

I do disagree here Karen.

You should listen to ALL the advice given.

Then go and do your own thing
