just wondered if anyone could help, both me and my wife cannot drive. Sad i know but, i would like to get both of my whippets to a show or a race in the near future. I live in leeds and finding out about these things seems a mystery and actually getting somewhere other than in leeds might be difficult. Just wondered if theres any shows comming up soon or races that i could get to easily. Would be great to finally get my two girls out and seeing what real whippets get upto. Any help would be grateful. thanx

Sorry I can't help...but can sympathise with a lack of transport and the frustration of getting to any events...no shows or racing ever appear to be walking distance from a station or bus stop do they!

Its a right pain i agree :geek:

Otley canine society are having their open show at the new sports hall at the university of Leeds on sunday 6th december. Entries close on mon 9th november, and schedules can be got online at fossedata

thank you littlenell, have been on fossedata and got all the info about the show at leeds university. I have printed off the entry form but am a bit worried about filling it in. The girls arent trained for this sort of stuff and they might just run round like loonies. I think i might just bring em down and have a look around and see what goes on first. Am not sure about running around like they do on crufts either in front of a hundred or so people. Would be good fun. but i dont think i am the man to do it lol.

Hopefully someone will be able to recommend a ringcraft class near by that you could take your girls to if you do decide showing is something you would enjoy. :)

try to find out about a canine club (show dogs) or obedience training in your area -- you may be able to find someone who will give you a lift or there may be someplace you can afford to go by taxi (I don't know what it's like in Leeds but I can usually find taxis in Ireland -- I do have to specify I'm taking a dog and wait for a driver who is okay with that).

It shouldn't take you too long to learn the basic ropes so that you aren't too nervous about taking your dogs into the ring. the main thing is they have to learn to walk okay on the lead around other dogs and to let a stranger stroke them and check their teeth. As for taking the dogs to a show if they are not entered, that could be a problem so why not go ahead and enter Otley.
