Keeping Dogs Off The Sofa At Night

I can keep the dogs off during the day and they wouldn't dream of getting on it (or the window seat) when I am around but the minute I go out or am upstairs, they both get on the window seat or the sofa.

Generally when I am out they are in the window seat but I think they wait for me to come home.

When I go to bed, I cover the window seat in cushions but the sofa is so accessible (and comfy!)

Any ideas?

No! No ideas! I love cuddling my girls on the sofa - nothing better!

look we all mostly agree its a no no but its always going to happen, i got a new 3 piece suite and kept two small chairs for the boys and thats what they get with a duvet on them, with most replys you will get i keep them outside lol which is ok by the way,

We have been putting a throw on it since we got the new one on Friday - theres just no keeping them off it! lol

once they start lol its hard to stop them, im round my mates as now and hes just gave me another duvet for them so happy days, for the dogs anyway lol

Mine sleep on my bed at night. Dogs aren't stupid and many will use what they prefer when their owners aren't around. The only way is to deny physical access to it when you aren't there.

Its the retriever that's the stinkiest I think!!

Both retrievers and many of the spaniel breeds can be quite smelly! I have poodles so I get no smell or hair! Just mud but I don't care about that lol!

My OH caught Molly asleep on the sofa laid out just like he does, with her head on the armrest, a few days ago. Normally we just come home to find the sofa suspiciously warm, but he was upstairs and she'd clearly forgotten that he was in so when he came downstairs there she was, spark out on his sofa (I have my recliner, he has the sofa). Since he made her jump by shouting in her ear while she was asleep we haven't seen any evidence of her getting up on the sofa, so maybe that's what you need to do?

And before anybody suggests that it would be a good idea to allow her on the furniture, have you any idea how much mud one long haired german shepherd can hold?

Im currently being sat on by Finlay , our 2 year old boy, im in the arm chair with the poof, other half is on the sofa with Inca , jess is in a dog bed and Daisy is on her own leather 2 seater in the other lounge, When we had Daisy as a pup i said no sofa, no up stairs etc, but do you know what, i have leather sofa's i tuck throws into the cushions which get washed twice a week so i dont mind as long as they are all happy and quiet.

the only way to keep them off is to make them uncomfy. I put the placemats under the throw if his nibs is out of favour

The general rule is that there has to be a dog blanket and he has to ask. One night when he was out of sorts and needed a snuggle I heard a very faint 'yip!' - god love him - he wanted to get on the bed but didn't want to wake me asking!

we dont allow the dogs on the furniture at home as thiers just not enough seating as it is ,so when were out we put some old metal walking sticks on the cushons to stop the dogs from getting comfortable,seems to work , give it a try.

That seems to be a major difference between moderately intelligent dogs and seriously clever ones- most GSDs carefully take the covers and blankets off things before they lie down on them. When Molly's been in the bath I put a few big towels down on her bed for her to lie on, but almost always she takes them off her bed before she lies on it.

Whats clever about taking a nice warm comfy blanket/towel of something before lying down?? and if their so seriously clever just tell them to stay off the furniture
