Following the Kennel Club's initiative to stop people selling dogs and puppies through awful sites like Preloved and Epupz which is according to the dog press "a source for puppy farmers and unscrupulous breeders" I'm pleased that in the dog press this week they have convinced Gumtree to step up to the mark and revise its key rules.

Great News!

Not before time! Bravo all those who supported this move!

That certainly is heartening to read

I'd given up hope of such sites banning dog sales

I don't think some people have a concept of the contribution these make to what is just a money-go-round, or the financial burden unsuspecting new owners are saddled with if they have an inbred puppyfarmed pup. Limiting the advertising stream in the age of digital media should certainly help

Its a start but I'm afraid there is still an uphill battle to win. The new rules state the site will not have adverts from puppy farmer, commercial breeders, puppies under 8 weeks old and stud services. Also when placing an advert you must provide all details which will be passed to law enforcement if requested. We just need to convince all the other sites out there that this is the responsible thing to do.

Oh good grief. So there's nothing stopping anybody lying about the age of their repeated staffy cross litters that they've produced by letting their bitch roam the estate. Family members' addresses can be used to evade the limit on numbers of litters before being required to register as a breeder

Oh well. It's a start

Personally, I'm all for a legal requirement for all pups to be chipped to their breeder

I agree Strix but its a start. Previously there was no requirement to even provide basic details. I also think microchipping should be compulsory, I also think that vets should report operations more ie c-sections so that the bitch can be tracked to see if they are being bred from too often.

Register as a breeder with whom?

The local authority. Here it would be Sheffield City Council
