As Press Officer for NPWRA, I have been asked by the Committee to pass on the following information;

 

We have been made aware by a responsible owner that one of thier Whippets developed a cough this morning(Monday).After a visit to the vet's it has been diagnosed with

Kennel Cough, other Kennel mates are at the moment showing no signs.

The Whippet did attend and run at yesterdays Championships. The cough has a 10 day incubation period.

 

Following on from this information Andover & District Whippet Racing Club Committee,having had several racers attending the Championships have decided to cancel Wednesday evening trialling and a Club meeting planned for this Sunday 9th October, we feel this is the right and proper motion for the safety of our Whippets.

Having discussed this with Geoff Cook, we have decided to cancel Gloucester race meet this weekend. It may be an over the top action but we would rather nip this in the bud, than run the risk of spreading the outbreak.

It's good to see there are at least two responsible clubs who care for the welfare of our whippets. I would guess that at least a third of the dogs who ran at the Nationals on Sunday will be entered to run at the WCRA championships this coming Sunday. With kennel cough having approximately a ten day incubation period, any dog which may have been infected would still not be showing signs of it one week later. Which means there may be several dogs running who are carrying the virus. Is anybody concerned about this?

I think you're absolutely right Rob.. Please think hard folks and dont risk this dragging on for months.

I haven't raced at a WCRA championship since 2008 but, I'm sure I recall there being a section on the entry form stating that the owner has to declare their dogs have not been in contact with an infectious disease for at least 21 days prior to the event. This means that any dogs who attended the Nationals last Sunday will not be able to attend the WCRA championships this coming Sunday. Are the WCRA going to enforce this? Or are they going to bury their heads in the sand and hope for the best? Maybe a one week postponement would be the responsible thing to do. I wonder what the kennel club and Whippet club would recommend. If anyone with puppies or old dogs get kennel cough, it could be very serious for them.

I have read via Facebook (mentioning no names) that some people think this is a hoax by the NPWRA supporters to scupper the Champs.

I haven't looked on Facebook to see which idiot started such a stupid rumour. No one could ever really believe that through all the upsets and arguments, that anyone would be so malicious as to set up such a rumour just to disrupt the Champs.

Each person, as always, have to make their own call.
