Just wondered how many people vaccinate their dogs? We are hoping to show Peggy and wonder if it might be a good idea to get her (and the others of course!) vaccinated?

I think dogs already have far too many unnecessary chemicals forced upon them, I know vets will rub their hands with glee but really Kennel Cough is only of concern to very young puppies and the very old. Boosters need only be given every three years and I dont do mine after the puppy ones
Was reading the other day that vaccines have been found to actually alter DNA and can be passed from one to another via DNA SCARY INDEED

Thanks for that reply June - I too work in a vets and have seen many dogs with Parvo - I would never forgive myself if one of my dogs got it because I hadn't vaccinated. I will be speaking to my vet re: the kennel cough vacc - not sure it is worth it, but will have a think.I agree with Nicky, after working for vets for 12 years I have seen a lot of parvo cases, and vaccinate mine as I think the risk of getting parvo is more of a risk than giving the vaccine poses. I do however leave a longer gap than the recommended 12 months - generally 15-18months. I have a very good vet now, and he doesn't feel that dogs should be over-vaccinated. He has given mine half booster for the past 2 years. He recommends a full booster every 2-3 years, but thinks Lepto and Parvo should be boosted annually as the risks of these are forever rearing their ugly heads (although he quite agrees to me leaving mine a few months over each year).
Anyone who has witnessed how quickly and dreadfully dogs die from parvo, (and even if they do recover sometimes have heart problems) - they couldn't fail to be worried enough about the disease to vaccinate.
That is not to say that I don't think vaccines play a large part in the autoimmune diseases we see nowadays, and unless I thought it was essential, I wouldn't vaccinate my dogs. Generally autoimmune problems can be treated - parvo cases are not normally so lucky. If one of my dogs contracted parvo, and I hadn't vaccinated them - I don't think I could live with the guilt.
Sorry - edited to say ......... No I don't vaccinate for Kennel Cough, and nor would I. The vaccine only protects against bordatella brochiseptica which is one of many strains of the virus. Over the years I have seen quite a few dogs actually get KC from the vaccine, albeit a milder dose. In my 32 years of whippet ownership, my dogs have only had it once, and if people whose dogs do have it are responsible, it an be contained. As it is not a life threatening condition, I don't feel it warrants vaccination.
