I know this is an old chestnut and it has brought controversy before to the Whippet racing world but i think an informed and non-malicious debate may be good for the sport on this subject.

Personally i am in favour of doing away with them but as things stand you are at a disadvantage if you dont use them whilst others do. What do you think?

Simply put these are boards that are put into non ped racing traps for the dogs to push off at the start. Each dog owner makes them for their own dogs.

Ahhh i see, wouldnt it be better to either have them or not? and if you have them then they are made by the club and put into the trap?

Seems a bit of an advantage thing to me

But then i ped race (well i will be getting back into it) and we dont have boards

greyhounds do not use them ped whippets do not use them why should non ped use them i would be happy if no one used them but if you do not use them and everyone else does you are at a disadvantage (yes i know i have made a pink one for ruby but i had no choice :- " )

Can of WORMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Mr Meades!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you entirely with regards to the Kickboard aspect and think there would be better/ quicker /safer /racing without them and a lot less injuries ---and this is my last post on the subject----

Been here before Mr Meades as you said and agree with the above post of Steve and Doobryirkin but as said we all want the same advantages so if they are being used then 'I will too' :- "

Besides it gives Sadie something to do when she gets 'board' :- " :teehee: she loves to draw and colour in bless her :D might not have best dogs but quite close to best board i think for greyhound traps :)

i think if they used to them i think they no more prone to injury.s than without using them  as im sure in the past as many picked up injurys but its like always from the past think things was better :- " and imo most injurys acure at pick up :D

iam all for doing away with them because it must do some damage to the dogs, pulled toes & mussel problems, i say get rid fast

most injuries are at the knock off i think :( wots up john are u board :D spelt as in kick (w00t) board why do athletes use em if they cause injury (w00t)no one is forced to use em if anyone wants not to use em then its simple dont :)) but i bet know one runs without one :D

totally agree with u mutley, can someone explain to me how a dog gets injured by using a kickboard? fair enuf if its an enornous one and the dog is squashed etc but personally if a normal sized kickboard is used i cant c how they cause injuries myself. i wud think more injuries wud b caused without a kickboard ie wot will the dog b kicking off then? the back door of the trap where its foot cud go thru a gap etc as there is a gap between the sides of the backdoor of a trap and the trap i know this coz nikki,s tail is always out.

athletes use them, swimmers kick off the wall dont they? perosnally i think more injuries r @ the end when all the dogs r pulling up quick 4 the lure and banging into each other etc.

all this just my own opinion on this matter i say its up to the individual if they want to use one or not? big stevie never used to use one with malawi cob and she used to win i remember one occasion he did use one and she came last as she never trapped. so they r not always to an advantage. IMO

before kick boards all the traps where lattered on the floors the dogs used to push off the lats just like a lot of greyhound traps i just think there seems to be a lot more back injurys these days with the use of the boards[ only my opinion]

i think kickboards are a step in the right direction,,,,,,,,,but come on some of you,,,,,leave room for the dog,,,,,

I remember a dog who got his back legs trapped in between the kickboard and trap, that dog stayed in the trap as the lid's went up .This was at the Highland Derby. It never ran again as it would not come out the traps. This was because the owner never knew traps we different sizes  , Im talking when this happened in 1991  a long time ago, but we (John & Myself) to this day always make sure the dog's leg can't get through any gaps in the traps

A nice reminder that all traps are not the same size :)

lated floors jeff i know what most would say to that surly they would cause some toe trouble :( if people really feel strongly against em they neednt use them i hope there all in my race :D

ohhh nooo gary farmer is gonna answer now :p

My dogs will not run any where without a kick board. If its pouring with rain and no kick boards are used the bottom of the traps become mud skid pads. Many years ago one of our dogs who always screemed in the traps did not run out when the lids went up. She was stood in the trap screeming. The trap man got to her as soon as he could, she had stood on a nail coming thought the bottom and her paw was pined to the floor. A board need not be huge but it gives your dog a dry clean safe start [ if the board it made properly]
