When the greyhound world can run it's races often for big money from a normal trap & ped racing runs it's races from unboarded traps plus most of the rest of the world seem to race without boards I just don't see why they are so essential to non-ped racing.

The argument about badly maintained or constructed traps is fair comment, but isn't that something to be taken up with the clubs/racing managers who allow equipment like that to be used?

What ever about `kick-boards`, the practise of walking up the track with your dog in the traps going mad, now that`s something that should be done away with ! !

Complete waste of time ! Could somebody please explain to me what the purpose of it is ?

A DOG OFF A BOARD IS AT AN ADVANTAGE TO ONE THAT HAS NO BOARD....BUT BECAUSE PEOPLE VARY ON HOW THEY MAKE THEM, IE DEGREES OFF ANGLE, THEN IT MUST BE STILL AN ADVANTAGE FOR PEOPLE THAT RUN THERE DOGS OFF THE BEST LAUNCH ANGLE.... SOME PEOPLE WILL HAVE THAT ANGLE, BUT A LOT WONT...SO NEEDLES TO SEY IS THAT EVEN THOUGH ALL RUN OFF THEM, SOME ARE STILL AT AN ADVANTAGE....MAYBE THERE SHOULD BE A DEGREE OFF ANGLE RULE, TO MAKE IT THE SAME START FOR ALL THE DOGS...OR BETTER STILL DO AWAY WITH THE BLOODY THINGS...

has anyone noticed the state trap floors get in during wet racing :( imagine a dog trying to scuttle of a flat wet floor :( talk about injuries Ive said it a thousand times if u dont want em dont use em divnt (w00t) wet floors loose mats if theres any in at all nails ect would surly cause more probs than a kick board :( nice dry carpet or decent rubber on a board cant see the problem but im sure someone will disagree :D

i think kick boards put your dog in the right position to get out without scrabling for grip .and allow to push out reasonable evenly.

what about front boards some dogs need them so they asume the position for a fast get out??

have u seen whippets @ the end of a race? someones got to get them off the rag and if that means the owner walking up the track then wots the problem? u might say one can put them in one can catch them.... wot if u race on your own?iagree people cud get up the track quicker than wot they do though.

Dont see many kick boards covering the whole of the trap floor,so dogs must still run off these wet and loose floors, if all clubs supplied floor bottoms that were ribbed and allowed grip then trap floors would not be a problem.

i personally say use them if u want to and if u dont like them....... dont use them nobody is making anyone use them. they r optional

Totally agree with you Sherry & Martin :D what if you have a dog that goes so mental in the traps, its practically run a race before it comes out!!!!!

I know this is an old chestnut and it has brought controversy before to the Whippet racing world but i think an informed and non-malicious debate may be good for the sport on this subject.Personally i am in favour of doing away with them but as things stand you are at a disadvantage if you dont use them whilst others do. What do you think?

For any ban on kickboards to work both the national body’s committees would have to get together and with consultation with their membership get agreement on the banning of the use of kickboards at their events. Of course clubs and race meetings that are not run by the national body’s could still allow the use of kickboards but as most racers run at the national body’s opens (especially championships) in my opinion they would train their dogs without kickboards and stick to race meetings that does not allow their use. My own opinion is that they are a complete pain they take up room in the car (even the fold away ones) at big events they are scattered all over the place at the traps along with half boards and home made trap floors and the latter two can have a effect on the operation of a trap. In my opinion even if the use of the whole lot of them was not allowed it still would not speed up racing as anybody who has worked on the traps at a major event will tell you there are a few who will just not put their dogs in when asked (I normally ask when the lure is half way up) and if one person does not load their dog in my experience the rest wont either therefore adding time to what can already long day especially for the workers. Even after saying that kickboards are a pain I would still use one if other racers were as even those who are against the use of them agree on one thing your dog will trap faster using a kickboard than a dog not using one and that could be the difference between winning a race or not winning a race. I am not sure on the opinion of kickboards causing injuries but in my opinion the smaller dogs need something to push them up to the front of the trap so for that reason alone I would still allow the use of them.

Having attended both non pedigree and pedigree race meetings there are a few differences but I for one prefer to walk up the track so that I can catch my dog at the end of the race as the last thing that I want is dogs that are taught to chase the lure fighting with each other when the lure has stopped to win their prize as even with muzzles on they could still cause harm to each other so in my opinion it is better to gain control of your dog as quickly as possible and any dog who is not trying to get to the lure for whatever reason is left just to run about and could run into anything so for that reason I prefer my dog in the trap until I get up to the run off. And as it has already been said some people race their dogs on their own and someone else catching the dog or loading it into a trap is not always an option not even for another racer to do it as some dogs do not like getting handled by strangers and some owners do not like other people handling their dogs.

(w00t) Yes kickboards are needed or what else would i do to pass the days of being pregnant haha anyone want one painting give me a shout ive got 2 month's left to pass!! (w00t)

mine covers the full floor its made for that reason so the only bit of floor showing is slight at the front no slipping in the wet :)

gaz :)

no way shud they be banned imo wotever happened to freedom of choice?

Just wondering what the next set of 'rules' might cover :D ..................what length of time the dogs are in the traps compared to the race before................how long it takes for the last person to go up the track ( perhaps we should set a time limit - dependant on size of feet and length of lower leg :teehee: )................as we all know size of poo bag is proportionally relevant to the times our dogs run 150 in

HAWAY FOLKS ....................................since when has life been fair:-" If people want to work at their dogs winning by fair means, brains and a great deal of artistic flair (w00t) then why not let them?

Maybe the next thread could be the most silly 'RULE' that anyone could think of!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
